About the Role

Sentara is hiring a Registered Nurse Unit Coordinator for the PRISM Award-winning Medical Specialties Unit at Sentara Norfolk General in Norfolk, VA. A sign-on bonus up to $20,000 is offered for qualified candidates, along with special sign-on bonuses and relocation assistance.

Shift: Weekend Nights (7p-7a) – either Friday/Saturday/Sunday or Saturday/Sunday/Monday.

Department Overview

This unit is the first in the Sentara System and second in Virginia to win the PRISM Award (Premiere Recognition in the Specialty of Med-Surg), recognizing safe, high-quality patient care. The team has over 20 years of combined experience certified as Medical-Surgical Nurses. The 42-bed unit serves a diverse patient population, including but not limited to:

• CHF
• Sickle Cell
• Renal Failure
• Vascular conditions
• Sepsis
• COPD
• Pneumonia
• Osteomyelitis with surgical interventions
• Wound care
• Various other disease processes

The unit features one main nursing station and seven substations, allowing nurses to visualize patient assignments and manage their work areas efficiently. Equipment integrates with EPIC, reducing data input time. The team operates under a "no staff left behind" motto, using walkie-talkies (including management) to maintain communication and support.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate proficiency in nursing practice for the assigned specialty area.
• Provide clinical leadership for nursing care delivery in the department.
• Lead safety and quality initiatives under the direction of the department manager.
• Simplify workflows and contribute to staff development.
• Increase staff satisfaction and promote excellent customer service.

Requirements

• 18 months of nursing experience required.
• BSN required; Master’s degree preferred (if the graduate degree is not in nursing, BSN is still required).
• Meets any requirements defined by the specific specialty.
• BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
• Professional Specialty Nursing Certification preferred.
• Active Virginia RN License.
