Registered Nurse (RN) Surgical PCU

About the Role

2 East is a 32-bed Surgical Stepdown / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) that cares for high-acuity surgical patients requiring frequent monitoring, multiple lines/tubes, and complex nursing care. The unit specializes in Core Surgical Services, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery, with additional populations including General Surgery, Trauma, and Plastic Surgery. This fast-paced, dynamic unit is known for high volume and high patient turnover, involving constant clinical decision-making with diverse patient scenarios, including medicine overflow patients when beds permit.

This role provides a strong professional foundation for nurses aspiring to ICU, Emergency Department, or other high-acuity specialty roles.

Schedule

Full-time and part-time positions available on a 12-hour night shift (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM). Every other weekend and every other holiday per year required for full-time and part-time team members.

Responsibilities

• Gathers and analyzes patient information
• Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises an individualized plan of care
• Uses teach-back methodology to educate patients and families
• Actively seeks to prevent potential hospital-acquired conditions
• Effectively communicates patient status, priority goals, and interventions during consultations, rounds, and handoffs
• Follows all HIPAA policies and procedures
• Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals

Requirements

• Graduation from a school of nursing that qualifies the graduate to sit for the NCLEX exam to become licensed as a Registered Nurse (BSN preferred)
• Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (required for Float Pool, Cardiac/Cath Lab, AICU, Emergency departments)
• Effective January 1, 2013, all new hires must have a BSN degree or agree in writing to obtain their BSN within five (5) years from date of hire or transfer to an RN role
• Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and age-specific needs
• Interpersonal skills necessary to initiate and maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
• Critical thinking skills necessary to perform principal duties and responsibilities
• Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when planning and performing professional nursing care
