Registered Nurse (RN) Surgical PCU

Shift: 12 Hour Night Shift (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
About the Role
2 East is a 32-bed Surgical Stepdown / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) that cares for high-acuity surgical patients requiring frequent monitoring, multiple lines/tubes, and complex nursing care. The unit specializes in Core Surgical Services, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery, with additional populations including General Surgery, Trauma, and Plastic Surgery. This fast-paced, dynamic unit features high volume and high patient turnover, with nurses engaging in constant clinical decision-making across diverse patient scenarios, including medicine overflow when beds permit. This role serves as a strong professional foundation for nurses aspiring to ICU, Emergency Department, or other high-acuity specialties.
Full-time and part-time positions require every other weekend and every other holiday per year.
Responsibilities
- Gathers and analyzes patient information
- Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises an individualized plan of care
- Uses teach-back methodology to educate patients and families
- Actively seeks to prevent potential hospital-acquired conditions
- Effectively communicates patient status, priority goals, and interventions during consultations, rounds, and handoffs
- Follows all HIPAA policies and procedures
- Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals
Requirements
- Graduation from a school of nursing that qualifies the graduate to sit for the NCLEX exam to become licensed as a Registered Nurse
- Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License
- BLS certification
- ACLS certification (required for Float Pool, Cardiac/Cath Lab, AICU, Emergency departments)
- BSN preferred; all new hires after January 1, 2013, must have a BSN or agree in writing to obtain one within five years of hire or transfer to an RN role
- Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and age-specific needs
- Interpersonal skills to initiate and maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
- Critical thinking skills to perform principal duties and responsibilities
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when planning and performing professional nursing care
