Overview
Works under the supervision of the OR Nurse Manager/Clinical Director and is responsible for ensuring operational oversight of surgical cases and the assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the total nursing care of assigned patients. The RN Cardiothoracic Specialty Surgical Lead is responsible for ensuring that proper preparation has taken place for surgical cases within the designated specialty through coordination with physicians, staff members, vendors, and surgical leadership.
What You Will Do
- Demonstrates ability to assess Cardiothoracic patients clinical and psychosocial needs by applying standards of practice as it relates to the specialty or patient population served in the Perioperative Services units/departments (see Cardiothoracic RN specific competencies and equipment checklists).
- PARTNERS WITH PATIENTS AND FAMILIES TO DEVELOP, IMPLEMENT AND EVALUATE PLAN OF CARE, TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL OUTCOMES OF THE PATIENT.
- Accurately completes all required clinical and quality documentation consistently per RHS standards and regulatory requirements.
- Evaluates for patient comprehension and documents.
- Works to implement cost-saving measures for assigned specialty through limited supply use accurate documentation and auditing of specialty charts, coordination with vendors and achieving physician support for product standardization.
- Works to train all staff assigned to the specialty to a level of proficiency with documented competencies. ENGAGES PHYSICIANS IN THE TRAINING PROCESS.
- WORKS DIRECTLY WITH THE SPECIALTY TECH AND LEAD FIRST ASSISTANT TO ENSURE COMPETENCIES ARE VALID AND COMPLETE FOR SURGICAL TECHS.
- WORKS WITH OR EDUCATOR TO ENSURE COMPLETION OF SPECIALTY SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES FOR ALL OR STAFF.
- RESPONSIBLE FOR EMERGENCY SUPPLIES, PROCESSES RELATED TO CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY TO INCLUDE FREQUENT DRILLS.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelors Degree, Nursing (Preferred) or Associates Degree, Nursing (Preferred) or Program Graduate, Nursing (Required) and High School Diploma or GED, Only Required if Nursing Diploma Graduate (Required)
- Experience: 2 years OR RN Experience (Required) 6 months of Cardiothoracic OR RN Operating Room Experience (Required)
- Licenses and Certifications: Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) or licensed in a compact state Upon Hire (Required) and CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire (Required) ACLS Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire (Required) Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) - The Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) Upon Hire (Required)
