About the Role

Haven Behavioral Healthcare, an Oceans Healthcare Company, is a behavioral healthcare system providing high-quality, specialty behavioral health services for individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues. The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff.

The Registered Nurse maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, other external governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards. The role involves assessing patients utilizing the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implementing interventions, and evaluating outcomes to promote, maintain, and restore physical and mental health while preventing illness.

The Registered Nurse interprets age/disability-specific information in response to the client population served and ensures the safe delivery of medication in accordance with policies, procedures, and physicians' orders. The role also includes thorough, accurate reporting and documentation of patient symptoms, responses, and progress, as well as responsibility for professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure.

Responsibilities

Utilizes the nursing process: assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation to formulate nursing interventions directed toward an individualized plan of care.
Identifies risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes, including discharge planning; prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes and evaluates their effectiveness.
Conducts ongoing assessment of clients from admission to discharge and initiates medical/psychiatric crisis intervention to stabilize patient conditions.
Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions; implements nursing interventions identified in the plan of care tailored to patient needs.
Administers medications as prescribed safely, provides education on prescribed medications, and recognizes signs and symptoms of adverse drug reactions.
Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and responsibility for decision-making, quality nursing care, and psychiatric nursing knowledge.
Reviews, revises, and updates medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes; transcribes and implements physician's orders accurately.
Documents care, progress, and response to intervention in medical records thoroughly and concisely.
Follows up on client care responsibilities, communicates incomplete assignments, and ensures continuity of care.
Implements staff assignments and delegation of duties using appropriate judgment and knowledge; advocates for patient needs and safety.
Utilizes nursing knowledge to meet the needs of the facility, patient population, and staff members; enhances evidence-based practice.
Floats among various clinical services where qualified and competent; performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment at an Oceans Healthcare hospital. Valid Compact licenses are also acceptable.
Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing is required.
One year of inpatient hospital experience is strongly preferred.

Qualifications & Skills

Ability to adapt to a high-stress environment and assess potential for patient escalation.
Effective oral and written communication skills to achieve positive results with internal and external customers.
Highly organized with an understanding and sensitivity to serve culturally diverse and special needs populations (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric, Chemical Dependency).
Basic knowledge of normal physical and emotional development.
Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care.
Self-confidence and conceptual thinking to lead and direct others.
Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment

Subject to many interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
12-hour rotating shifts in a high-paced, potentially stressful atmosphere.
May experience disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior.
Spends approximately 90% or more of the time inside a building protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
