About the Role

The Registered Nurse in the Med Surg Unit is accountable for the safe, individualized, efficient, and effective management and delivery of nursing care for hospitalized inpatients and hospital-based outpatients.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes additional duties per RN licensure, training, and scope of practice when floating to other areas of the medical center, following established floating guidelines
  • Demonstrates critical thinking by synthesizing best practice protocols and standards with patient data to decide on the best course of action
  • Identifies and responds to changes in clinical condition, communicating timely updates to the care team using SBAR format
  • Includes patient and significant others in the plan of care, addressing education needs from admission through discharge with complete and accurate documentation
  • Actively participates in learning experiences for orientees, co-workers, and students as assigned
  • Takes ownership of professional development by staying current with practice standards, seeking learning opportunities, and sharing new knowledge with peers
  • Engages in organizational initiatives and department operations by attending at least 50% of department meetings, one Employee Forum annually, one Mission for Staff session annually, one volunteer experience annually, and other assigned in-services
  • Incorporates safe medication administration principles, including the five rights of medication administration and compliance with Avera MedSafe bar-coding
  • Participates in quality improvement by following best practice standards for Core Measures and incorporating Appropriate Care Interventions into patient care plans
  • Coordinates care with providers across the continuum, not just the acute phase
  • Ensures readiness for emergency situations, including appropriate use of Rapid Response procedures and fulfilling assigned code team roles
  • Participates in the development of the trauma program, following MDH Level III trauma designation guidelines
  • Actively engages in a committee or project improvement team to enhance patient experience, workflow efficiency, employee satisfaction, or organizational mission
  • Familiar with EHR, attends assigned trainings, and serves as an IT resource for physicians in assigned EHR modules
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds with the treatment team

Unit Charge Nurse Responsibilities

  • Meets all essential functions of a staff nurse and may have a patient assignment
  • Begins each shift with Daily Line-Up, engaging the team in discussion and concluding with prayer
  • Supports service excellence by ensuring completion of hourly rounding, consistent use of AIDET, and managing organizational goals and initiatives
  • Considers safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care for unit assignments
  • Utilizes critical thinking and department staffing matrix to staff the unit appropriately
  • Plans meal breaks at the start of each shift, keeps shift report focused and on time, minimizes overtime, and ensures organized handoffs
  • Investigates incidents, patient complaints, and care issues, reporting to nursing supervisor with suggestions for improvement
  • Reports all AHE and high-risk situations to department leader, Assistant CNO, and/or CNO immediately
  • Ensures quality care delivery on all shifts through regular interaction with Unit Charge RNs and as needed based on department activity

Requirements

  • Ability to work the specified hours, including visual acuity and effective communication skills
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention Certification (CPI) within 180 days of hire
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice

Schedule

  • Rotating day/night shifts: 7 a.m.–7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
  • 68 hours per pay period
  • Every third weekend
  • One summer and one winter holiday rotation
