Registered Nurse RN Labor Delivery

About the Role

The Registered Nurse performs direct patient care within the scope of the Registered Nurse Practice Act. Utilizes therapeutic communication in daily practice, maintains a safe and therapeutic environment, and identifies nursing problems as they relate to the individual needs of the patient. Plans individualized patient care utilizing an interdisciplinary approach and participates in performance improvement activities. Provides care and coordinates participation that fosters the goals of the hospital’s mission and vision statement.

When acting in charge, Registered Nurses are responsible for day-to-day activities to ensure the delivery of quality patient care in a therapeutic environment. This includes making staff assignments based on patient needs and the skill of the staff, serving as role models and clinical resources, and responding in a timely manner to requests for information or follow-up with physician, staff, or patient issues.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates knowledge, skill, and competence in the management of patients in the different stages of labor, including identifying normal physiologic adaptations.
• Manages patients with complications of pregnancy and high-risk pregnancy patients.
• Reflects competency in clinical nursing practices such as use of external and fetal monitors, Doppler, IV insertion and maintenance, vaginal examination, infant security, blood product administration, EMTALA screening, and sterile technique.
• Achieves and maintains AWHONN certification: within 1 year of hire for RNs with no experience, or within 6 months for RNs with L&D experience.
• Demonstrates competency in the use of CPN system for documentation.
• Manages immediate postpartum patients and demonstrates competency to circulate for cesarean sections in the OR.
• Provides a safe environment for patients and responds to risks and incidents according to quality assurance and risk management policies.
• Completes educational requirements and complies with policies and procedures regarding safety guidelines established by OSHA, JCAHO, and other regulatory agencies.
• Consistently provides appropriate services and care in accordance with the unique needs inherent to patient’s age and culture.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required or must be currently enrolled.
• Current RN license in Texas and/or current Compact License.
• 1 year of current Labor & Delivery (L&D) experience required.
• Current BCLS Certification required.
• Current ACLS and NRP Certifications required.
• AWHONN Fetal Monitoring course within 90 days of hire date.
