Registered Nurse (RN) - Emergency Department - Nights

About the Role

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department assumes responsibility for the nursing processes of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation to deliver safe, evidence-based care within their scope of practice under the supervision of nursing department management.

Responsibilities

• Collects and assesses initial and ongoing data about the health status of the patient.
• Initiates and/or revises an individualized plan of care that includes immediate and long-term outcomes for the patient/family, reflecting the plan of the entire healthcare team.
• Carries out interventions safely and in compliance with policy to facilitate achievement of expected outcomes.
• Evaluates patient response to intervention/therapy based upon expected outcomes.
• Provides patient education by explaining procedures, medications, and giving instructions at a level the patient can understand.
• Addresses patient’s questions and concerns; verifies patient informed consent when indicated.
• Documents and communicates all required components of patient care.
• Provides care to acutely and critically ill patients in a highly technical and ongoing monitoring environment.
• Assesses patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records, and clinical data.
• Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
• Performs airway management and identifies physical symptom changes, providing appropriate treatment.
• Demonstrates established techniques of safe administration of medications and parenteral fluids according to hospital policies and procedures.
• Develops and implements patient plan of care, observing outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrates competency in therapeutic/diagnostic interventions, including IVs, incision/wound care, medication administration, catheterization, and specimen collections.
• Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions, and side effects; assesses and reassesses pain, utilizing appropriate pain management techniques.
• Promotes, advocates, and collaborates to protect the health, safety, and rights of each patient.
• Provides patient/family education through assessment of learning readiness, needs, and ability; evaluates effectiveness of teaching.
• Delegates to non-RN personnel in accordance with State Board of Nursing and hospital policy.
• Manages resources and patient flow by matching nursing competencies with individualized patient and unit needs.
• Uses standards of care, hospital policies/procedures, and regulatory guidelines to guide practice.
• Functions effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making.
• Precepts/mentors new staff or nursing students as needed.
• Seeks learning opportunities, continuing education, and experiences reflecting current practice to maintain skills and competence.
• Uses current healthcare research findings and evidence to expand clinical knowledge and enhance role performance.
• Maintains professional records providing evidence of competency and lifelong learning.
• Adapts to rapidly changing technology as evidenced by competency in technology and equipment used in patient care.
• Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records; documents ongoing status, interventions, patient response, and outcomes accurately and timely.
• Utilizes information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making.
• Demonstrates applied knowledge in medical/surgical patient care, pain assessment, pharmaceuticals, laboratory values, safety, legal issues, and emergency equipment.
• Performs assessment/data collection systematically, focusing on physiologic, psychologic, and cognitive status.
• Formulates a goal-directed plan of care prioritized based on nursing diagnosis and patient outcomes.
• Implements care knowledgeably and consistently to achieve desired patient outcomes.
• Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential needs and available resources.
• Coordinates care delivery and education through collaboration with patient, family, and healthcare team.
• Performs documentation accurately and concisely in a timely manner.
• Reviews and carries out physician orders professionally.
• Performs efficiently in emergency situations, following protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events.
• Follows organizational policies and procedures to provide safe patient care.
• Attends mandatory in-services and participates in staff meetings.

Requirements

• Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university (required).
• Bachelor Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university (preferred).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 180 days (required).
• Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) in the State of Kansas (required).
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) certification within 14 days (required).

Preferred Qualifications

• Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.
• Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within 180 days.
• Fetal Heart Monitor certification within 1 year.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (required for Labor & Delivery, Emergency Department, Pre-op/PACU, Pain Clinic units).

Skills

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Knowledge of general nursing theory and practice.
• Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques involved in performing general nursing services.
