About the Role

The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff. The Registered Nurse maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards.

The Registered Nurse assesses the patient utilizing the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implements interventions, and evaluates outcomes consistent with policy and appropriate to the patient’s condition, promoting, maintaining, and restoring physical and mental health, and preventing illness. They interpret age/disability-specific information in response to the client population served and provide safe medication delivery in accordance with policies, procedures, and physicians' orders.

The Registered Nurse is responsible for thorough, accurate reporting, and documentation of the patient’s symptoms, responses, and progress, as well as professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure. All duties are performed in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, Oceans' Mission, policies, and procedures, and Performance Improvement Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation) to formulate nursing interventions and develop an individualized plan of care.
  • Identifies risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes, including discharge planning; prescribes and evaluates interventions to attain outcomes.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments from admission to discharge and initiates medical/psychiatric crisis intervention as needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric disorders and implements appropriate nursing interventions tailored to patient needs.
  • Administers medications safely, provides education on prescribed medications, and recognizes adverse drug reactions.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and responsibility for decision-making and quality nursing care.
  • Reviews, revises, and updates medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes.
  • Transcribes and implements physician’s orders and documents care, progress, and responses accurately.
  • Follows up on client care responsibilities, communicates incomplete assignments, and ensures continuity of care.
  • Implements staff assignments and delegates duties using appropriate judgment and knowledge.
  • Functions as a patient advocate and assists staff and patients as needed.
  • Utilizes nursing resources to enhance evidence-based practice and meets facility, patient, and staff needs.
  • Floats among various clinical services where qualified and competent and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment (valid Compact licenses are acceptable).
  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing is required.
  • One year of inpatient hospital experience is strongly preferred.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Ability to adapt to a high-stress environment and assess potential for patient escalation.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to achieve positive results with internal and external customers.
  • Highly organized with an understanding and sensitivity to serve culturally diverse and special needs populations (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric, Chemical Dependency).
  • Basic knowledge of normal physical and emotional development.
  • Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care.
  • Self-confidence and conceptual thinking to lead and direct others.
  • Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Schedule

  • 12-hour rotating shifts.

Work Environment

Subject to many interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. The environment can be high-paced and stressful, requiring the ability to cope mentally and physically. May experience disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior. Approximately 90% or more of the time is spent inside a building that offers protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
