Registered Nurse (RN) - Comprehensive Medicine Unit - Rotating - PRN

This role integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. Assists the healthcare team with illness prevention, injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Responsibilities

• Assist the healthcare team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
• Provide direction, education, and leadership at the unit level.
• Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care to patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
• Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
• Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
• Practice within the boundaries of regulations governing nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia, guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
• Organize work and delegate/supervise others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.

Requirements

• Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state licensure (required for hire).
• Current RN licensure in Virginia and AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (required for continued employment).
• Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
• All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete it within five years unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Qualifications

• Clinical Nurse I: No prior RN experience required. Preferred: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or as applicable to the area of practice.
• Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months of RN experience (required). Preferred: Academic healthcare experience or experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting.
• Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience (required). Preferred: Academic healthcare experience, experience with a similar patient population, or certification in a specialty area.
• Preferred for all levels: Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.

Schedule

• Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays.
• Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.
• Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting 20-50 lbs.
• Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
• Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing (steps, ladders), and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
• Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking.
• Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, steady workflow, multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, and noisy conditions.
