About the Role

6CC is a 40-bed oncology unit with 20 beds dedicated to the Leukemia service and 20 beds dedicated to the HOA (Hematology/Oncology Associates) service. HOA provides symptom management for a wide variety of cancer patients, focusing on treating side effects of cancer treatment such as nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, pain management, fevers/infections, and failure to thrive. The unit delivers compassionate and supportive care to patients and their families.

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, located in Winston-Salem, NC, is part of a nationally recognized academic health system. The 885-bed tertiary care hospital includes the region’s only children’s hospital, burn center, and Level I adult and pediatric trauma centers. The campus also houses a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and clinical centers of excellence in cardiovascular care, brain health, neurology, sports medicine, orthopedics, transplantation, and nephrology.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate daily unit operations to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Make staffing and patient assignments based on patient acuity, staff competency, and workflow.
  • Serve as the clinical resource and first point of escalation for staff, patients, and providers.
  • Support patient flow by coordinating admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Promote patient safety, quality outcomes, and regulatory compliance.
  • Coach, mentor, and support frontline staff while fostering a positive team culture.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure effective communication and care coordination.
  • Respond to emergencies and operational issues while maintaining situational awareness across the unit.
  • Assist with orientation, education, performance improvement initiatives, and implementation of evidence-based practice.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in nursing.
  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the teammate practices.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of recent acute care nursing experience required; pediatric inpatient experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise and strong critical thinking skills.
  • Previous leadership experience as a Charge Nurse, Clinical Lead, Preceptor, or other informal leadership role preferred.
  • Experience coordinating patient flow, staffing assignments, and interdisciplinary collaboration preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach staff while promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork.

Pay

Pay range: $41.10 - $61.65 per hour.

Base compensation is based on factors such as qualifications, skills, relevant experience, and/or training. Additional premium pay may be available for shift, on-call, and other incentives for select positions. Opportunity for annual increases based on performance.

Schedule

Full-time position with 36 hours per week. Three 12-hour shifts per week on days.
