About the role
As a PCU nurse in the Interventional Cardiac Progressive Care Unit at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center—a Level I Adult Trauma Center—you will care for complex, acutely ill cardiac patients, including those with heart failure, renal failure, COPD, and post-interventional cardiac needs. You will monitor critical vital signs, detect changes in patient condition, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide timely interventions. Specialty training for this patient population is required and provided.
The unit welcomes experienced PCU nurses as well as those with backgrounds in Telemetry, ICU, Medical/Surgical, or other acute or critical care settings. This is a full-time day shift position, working three 12-hour shifts per week (7:00 AM to 7:30 PM), with rotating weekends and holidays. Eligible shifts include an 18% night-shift differential and a flat $3/hour weekend shift differential when applicable.

Responsibilities
- Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs.
- Review patient history and physical with patient/family; ensure completion within appropriate timeframe.
- Review diagnostics, laboratory data, and report abnormal results to physicians and caregivers.
- Complete assessment and reassessments according to patient need and organizational policy.
- Formulate and implement a plan of care, including discharge planning, using assessment data and input from the patient, family, and health team.
- Set realistic, measurable goals in collaboration with the patient and family, considering physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, age-specific, and educational needs.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to review and revise the plan of care based on patient status.
- Provide direct patient care, coordinate, delegate, and supervise activities of the health care team in compliance with policies, standards of care, and regulatory requirements.
- Promote continuity of care through accurate and complete communication with other caregivers.
- Evaluate patient and family response to care and teaching; revise the plan of care as needed.
- Evaluate patient progress toward goals and outcomes in collaboration with the health care team.
- Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record legibly, timely, and in accordance with policy.
- Provide care based on best evidence available; participate in research activities within clinical practice.
- Participate in unit or facility shared leadership, education, role development, and orientation of personnel, patients, students, families, and visitors.
- Mentor and precept others as appropriate.
- Contribute to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care.
- Actively participate in improving national nursing quality indicators and outcomes, including professional organizations.
- Interact with staff across departments, physicians, patients, families, external health care institutions, community providers, and agencies.
- Synthesize and prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to health status changes.
Requirements
- Current, valid RN license in state of practice, temporary/interim RN license, or compact RN licensure for current state of practice.
- BLS certification required.
- Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.
- Experience in the clinical area for which you are applying is desired; must maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the area.
- Banner Registry and Travel acute care positions require a minimum of one year of experience in an acute care hospital setting within the past 12 months in the specialty area.
- For Home Health settings, must operate a personal vehicle with a valid driver’s license and active auto insurance.
- For positions at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, Banner Home Care/Hospice, or Boswell Skilled Nursing Facility: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment.
- For positions at Banner MD Anderson on the Banner University Medical Center Phoenix campus: State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment (required for the Whole Family Counseling Program).
- For positions at Banner McKee Senior Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit: Colorado Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment.
- For Banner Staffing (BSS) Behavioral Health roles in Arizona: State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- Professional certification in relevant specialty.
- Additional related education and/or experience.
Pay
Eligible shifts include an 18% night-shift differential and a flat $3/hour weekend shift differential when applicable.
