Registered Nurse (RN) - Ambulatory OR - Days

Our Ambulatory Surgery Center in Short Pump offers outpatient surgical services that allow patients to safely and comfortably recover from surgery in their own homes. The center specializes in procedures that don’t require an overnight hospital stay, including orthopedics, urology, plastics, gynecology, surgical oncology, colon and rectal, as well as ear, nose, and throat. Patients benefit from the latest techniques, including minimally invasive, diagnostic, and preventative procedures.

Schedule

• Monday–Friday day shift hours
• No holidays, weekends, or call required

About the Role

The Clinical Nurse integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. This role assists the healthcare team with illness prevention, injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. Nurses provide direction, education, and begin acquiring leadership skills at the unit level. Responsibilities include:

• Delivering and accurately documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care
• Safely administering prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions

Progression through Clinical Nurse levels (I, II, III) reflects increasing mastery of clinical skills, leadership responsibilities, and the ability to anticipate and intervene in patient situations. Higher levels involve greater independence, mentorship, and resource mobilization to meet patient and family needs.

Requirements

• All Levels:
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia (or eligibility/compact state licensure)
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (required for continued employment)
  • Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the Virginia Board of Nursing
  • RNs without a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete it within five years
• Experience:
  • Clinical Nurse I: No prior RN experience required (preferred: LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner experience in an acute care setting or applicable area)
  • Clinical Nurse II: 12–24 months of RN experience (preferred: academic healthcare experience or experience with a similar patient population)
  • Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience (preferred: academic healthcare experience, experience with a similar patient population, or certification in specialty area)

Responsibilities

• Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders
• Practice within Virginia nursing regulations and ANA Code of Ethics
• Adhere to VCUHS policies and procedures
• Organize work and delegate/supervise RNs, LPNs, care partners, unit secretaries, and others
• Serve age-specific patient groups as assigned

Physical Requirements

• Lifting up to 20 lbs
• Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances
• Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, and reaching
• Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking, writing, and reading skills
• Ability to handle a fast-paced, noisy environment with multiple priorities and frequent customer interactions
