Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Medical Psychiatric Nurse (Med/Psych RN) to join our multidisciplinary team in providing high-quality care to patients with both medical and psychiatric conditions. The Med-Psych Nurse will work with individuals who have complex health needs, delivering patient-centered care while managing physical and mental health concerns simultaneously. This position collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to ensure patient care plans are implemented and monitored for effectiveness.
Responsibilities
- Uses the nursing process, critical thinking skills, professional judgment, and the attributes of Careful Nursing to provide care for an assigned population of patients.
- Affirms patient needs to identify both medical and psychiatric issues, monitors vital signs, and gathers patient histories.
- Plans care and delegates tasks to ancillary personnel based on patient assessment.
- Administers medications, including psychiatric medications (such as antipsychotics or antidepressants) and treatments for physical health conditions.
- Works closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care while also educating patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies for managing both mental and physical health.
- Advocates for patients, ensuring they have access to appropriate medical and psychiatric services.
- Participates in patient rounds and contributes to team discussions on treatment and care planning.
- Provides crisis intervention and support during behavioral health events.
- Synthesizes information and resources to care for complex, higher acuity patients.
- Completes designated unit-specific competencies.
- Completes at least 16 hours of continuing education, in addition to mandatory in-service requirements, within the last year that is specific to daily clinical practice.
- Coordinates discharge planning by identifying discharge needs, implementing/revising, and communicating the plan in collaboration with the patient/family/significant others.
- Discusses patient progress, problems, and needs with physician and multidisciplinary team members regularly to ensure that goals for discharge are met.
- Assures high levels of quality of care through compliance with regulatory standards, reference to current research related to patient care outcomes, and participation in the data collection and analysis process of ongoing quality monitoring.
- Uses supplies cost-effectively and efficiently and works with the management team to make unit supply level adjustments, additions, and revisions.
Qualifications
- Affirms associate degree from a professional nursing program (required)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or current enrollment in a BSN program at an accredited school of Nursing (preferred)
- Current Registered Nurse License in this state (Illinois) (required)
- BLS and ACLS (required)
- Two to three years of Medsurg & Psych Experience (required)
- Able to work various hours as needed
- Able to lift and move patients as needed
- Knowledge of psychotropic medications and their interactions with other medical treatments. (Required)
