About the Role
The Orthopedic Surgery Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital is a 21-bed unit dedicated to providing exceptional care to adult and geriatric patients recovering from a wide range of orthopedic procedures, including joint replacements and complex fracture repairs. This fast-paced, hands-on unit combines expert surgical recovery care with a patient-centered approach, ensuring optimal outcomes and a smooth transition from hospital to home. The unit holds the esteemed Gold Seal Certification from The Joint Commission as an Orthopedic Center of Excellence for all total joint surgeries, reflecting high performance on quality metrics and patient experience.
Nurses on this unit enjoy a collaborative and supportive work environment with 12-hour shifts and self-scheduling on a 6-week rotation, including every 3rd weekend and holiday rotations. New team members receive a 6-week orientation with a dedicated preceptor, tailored to their experience level, covering orthopedic recovery protocols, mobility assistance, pain management, and patient education.
Nurse-to-patient ratios support a manageable workload and quality care: Day Shifts: 1:4-5; Night Shifts: 1:5-6.
Schedule
- Part Time Nights (48 hours bi-weekly)
- 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Every 3rd weekend rotation
- Holiday rotation
Responsibilities
- Perform and document initial and ongoing patient/family assessments.
- Develop, communicate, and update individualized plans of care, including discharge planning.
- Provide safe, patient-centered care that supports autonomy, dignity, and diversity.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies and take appropriate clinical action.
- Carry out physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
- Complete assigned care and documentation within required timeframes.
- Administer medications/treatments safely and perform technical skills per policy.
- Evaluate patient responses and revise the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Supervise and delegate tasks appropriately to other team members.
- Serve as a clinical resource and support training/education of staff and students.
- Maintain current clinical knowledge and adhere to organizational and departmental standards.
- Function in relief charge/resource roles as requested.
Requirements
- Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing
- New hires required to obtain BSN within 5 years of hire
- BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers)
- Registered Nurse with knowledge, judgment, and skills derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences
- Preferred: Membership in related professional organization
- Preferred: More than 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time acute care experience
- Preferred: Certification in specialty
