About the Role

The Registered Nurse is a member of the interdisciplinary team working in collaboration with the Physician. The Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing care process consistent with their license and/or certification, including initiation of culturally competent continuum of care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Responsibilities include overseeing coordination of the interdisciplinary plan of care and ensuring its consistency with the medical treatment plan.

The patient care process includes:

  • Assessment: Identification, gathering, and organization of subjective and objective data pertaining to the patient, family, or significant other, including physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects.
  • Planning: Identification of actual or potential problems and desired outcomes (goals) resulting in a documented plan of care to guide the patient, family, significant other, and interdisciplinary team.
  • Intervention: Implementation of specific interventions or orders consistent with the plan of care and medical treatment plan.
  • Evaluation: Determination of the effectiveness of interventions in achieving the plan of care, including reassessment and revisions as needed. Documentation of required actions is included in this step.

Based on assessment findings, the Registered Nurse identifies and prioritizes patient problems related to biophysical, psychological, environmental, self-care, educational, and social status. Goals are established to direct patient care and health promotion, with education playing a critical role in empowering patients.

The Registered Nurse may also perform Limited Laboratory Services, including patient identification and preparation for specimen collection, processing samples, performing quality control testing, instrument maintenance, monitoring and reporting test results (including critical values), and maintaining competency in these tasks.

Licensed and registered care providers document the assessment, plan, intervention, and evaluation within their scope of practice. All patient care activities adhere to standards, procedural guidelines, and organizational policies. The Registered Nurse supports performance improvement initiatives and provides leadership to other members of the patient care team while assuming responsibility for continued professional and personal growth through educational activities.
