Registered Nurse - Medical ICU

Experienced RNs: Full-time positions available for nurses who have already graduated nursing school. Prior nursing experience within an ICU is strongly preferred.

Unit Description

The Medical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is a 20-bed critical care facility, the largest of Shadyside's ICUs. We primarily care for critically ill oncology medical, cardiac, and post-stem cell transplant patients, however, due to our size, we frequently receive overflow from many other areas of the hospital. You can expect to see procedures such as tracheostomies and bronchoscopies right at the bedside, as well as the use of ventilators, vasopressors, and CRRT machines. The MICU is team-oriented and can feel hectic at times, offering a rewarding environment for nurses who enjoy thinking on their feet to meet challenges and solve problems.

Responsibilities

Requirements

• At least 1 year of RN experience.
• An Associates Degree in Nursing, BSN, or MSN is required.
• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide care and interact with all ages of patients. Understand the principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
• Establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with patients and their families, executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, and other departments.
• Work productively and effectively in an environment with changing priorities that require specialized skills.
• Think critically to analyze and problem-solve to deliver the best patient care. Use sound clinical judgment and problem-solving to deliver quality patient care when it matters most.
• Understand, apply, and champion nursing best practices.
• Ability to work productively and effectively within complex environments and handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
• Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – within 12 months of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – required based on AHA standards that include both didactic and skills demonstration within 30 days of hire.
• Registered Nurse (RN) or TPP (Temporary Practice Permit) – current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state.
• UPMC-approved national certification preferred.
• Act 34 clearance.

Pay

The minimum rate of pay for a non-BSN Professional Staff Nurse is $37.00. The final job title and rate of pay will be based upon both individual qualifications and candidate choice.

Schedule

Rotation shifts including weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.
