Registered Nurse Lactation Consultant - Per Diem

About the role

Position Overview: The RN Lactation Consultant develops, implements, and evaluates lactation education programs, collaborating with medical and nursing staff to meet patient needs. This role involves delivering prenatal breastfeeding education, conducting private consultations, managing loaner pump programs, and supporting community outreach initiatives. The consultant promotes lactation philosophy among staff, provides ongoing staff development, and participates in performance improvement and research projects related to lactation.

Responsibilities

• Develop protocols supporting breastfeeding for all lactating mothers.
• Educate patients prenatally about breastfeeding benefits.
• Teach breastfeeding classes and provide private consultations.
• Maintain resource centers and support groups.
• Follow-up with new mothers and infants requiring special care.
• Foster staff education on lactation and supplemental nursing techniques.
• Participate in patient care rounds and quality improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to research efforts and outreach programs.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 5 years of RN experience.
• Certification as a Certified Breastfeeding Counselor or Lactation Counselor (IBCLC preferred).
• A graduate from a Specialty Training Program in Nursing is required.
