Responsibilities
- Affirms physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs and evaluates patients' adaptation to health changes
- Develops a plan of care based on patients' disease, symptoms, and response to treatment
- Educates patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects, and symptom management
- Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care
- Refers patients, families, and caregivers to other clinical resources and professionals such as social work, home health care, clinical nutrition, etc.
- Implements, evaluates, and modifies the plan of care
- Integrates research and evidence-based knowledge into clinical practice
- Nursing Care and Assessment
- Demonstrates knowledge of standard treatment and medication side effects
- Performs nursing assessment, reviews relevant lab results, assesses pain and other symptoms
- Administers IV hydration, electrolyte replacement, chemotherapy/biotherapy, and blood products
- Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs
- Demonstrates awareness of the potentially hazardous nature of many of the agents administered and uses correct precautions when handling them
- Follows all procedures regarding safe disposal of any materials used in the administration of chemotherapy or other hazardous agents and blood products
- Patient and Family Education
- Provides patient and family education in coordination with the treatment and care plan
- Conducts learning needs assessment for patient and caregiver(s)
- Ensures patients have clinic contact information and understand when to call if symptoms arise or persist post-infusion therapy
- Communication and Teamwork
- Communicates or escalates patient symptoms and concerns to providers as needed
- Collaborates with the care team to provide effective and efficient patient care
- Requests consultations from social work, dietitian, spiritual care, and/or any other supportive care teams when patient's situation indicates
- Professional Development and Clinic Engagement
- Participation in continuing education, departmental projects, committee work, and quality improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license or current NLC multistate license (MSL); MSL primary state of residence must be updated to WA within 60 days of hire
- Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
- ONS Chemotherapy Provider Card (required within 3 months of hire)
- Critical thinking; ability to practice the cognitive skills of analyzing, applying standards, discriminating, information seeking, logical reasoning, predicting, and transforming knowledge
- Ability to develop clinical judgment
- Time Management skills; ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently
- Effective communication skills; ability to look and listen for cues, ask open-ended questions, explore cues, use pauses, screen responses, and clarify responses
- Ability to effectively provide information; check what information the person knows already, give small amounts of information at a time, use clear terms and avoid jargon, avoid detail unless it is requested, check for understanding, and pause and wait for a response
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Certification in oncology or specialty practice area
- 2 years of RN Oncology experience in an ambulatory infusion setting
