Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care in preparation for anticancer therapies.
- Safely administer chemotherapy and biotherapy in accordance with orders.
- Perform patient assessments before, during, and after treatment.
- Maintain and flush central venous access devices (e.g., ports, PICCs).
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions and intervene as needed.
- Proper assessment and management of extravasation and infiltration.
- Provide education to patients and families on treatment expectations, symptom evaluation, and self-care.
- Collaborate with physicians and team members to adjust care plans as needed.
- Document treatments, assessments, and communications accurately in the EMR.
- Support compliance with clinic standards, including ONS guidelines, ASCO-COA Oncology Medical Home Standards, and QOPI quality measures.
- Prepare sterile parenteral admixtures (hazardous and non-hazardous) under USP 797/800 regulations.
- Accurately calculate and verify drug dosages.
- Track medication inventory and monitor expiration dates.
- Handle and store hazardous medications according to safety protocols.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant admixture workspace.
- Participate in training and continuous education in chemotherapy agents, safety procedures, and EHR proficiency.
- Collaborate with the clinical team to verify and interpret admixture orders.
- Reviews new regimen orders and compares them to NCCN guidelines and/or other source documentation provided by the ordering physician; ensures that dosages, schedules and drugs match the indication, and that adequate supportive measures are in place before the final orders are saved by the physician.
Requirements
- Graduate from an accredited nursing school.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska (required).
- Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification (required).
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) chemotherapy/biotherapy certification or willingness to obtain.
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification encouraged when eligible.
- Sterile admixture training preferred for admixture duties.
- A minimum of one year of nursing experience is required.
- Experience administering chemotherapy and working with oncology patients preferred.
- Prior sterile admixture experience is ideal but not required.
