Registered Nurse - IMCU - Day/Night Rotation

About the Role

Join our 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) providing high-acuity care to patients, including:

• Cardiac and EP procedures
• Respiratory failure management (CPAP, BiPAP)
• Cardiac arrhythmia management
• Sepsis and DKA care

We offer an individualized, comprehensive 16-week orientation program that includes the Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO), ACLS certification, and NIHSS certification for new nurses. Additional support includes a mentorship program after orientation, a residency program for new graduates, and opportunities for committee participation to shape your nursing practice. Professional growth is encouraged through a Clinical Ladder, and certification for Progressive Care Nursing (PCCN) is available after two years of experience. This role serves as a steppingstone to ICU/CCU career goals.

Responsibilities

• Implement, direct, and coordinate patient care using the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Recognize and treat physical and psychosocial changes unique to the age/population served.
• Demonstrate safe medication practices and maintain a professional image.
• Complete chart checks to ensure no missed orders and accurately transcribe physician’s orders.
• Use therapeutic communication skills and assess patient education needs.
• Attend at least 50% of staff/committee meetings and in-services.
• Demonstrate leadership through the nursing process and supervision while maintaining accountability for treatment and patient outcomes.
• Act as a resource person for patient care, specialty areas, orientation, and staff teaching.
• Analyze assessment data, identify priority problems, and document on the Plan of Care in PCS for patients and families.
• Complete and document discharge assessments against plan of care goals.
• Initiate and maintain Intravenous Therapy according to IV standards.
• Respond appropriately to emergency situations and utilize proper body mechanics.
• Function as a virtual nurse, including admissions, discharges, education, documentation, and collaboration with bedside staff.
• Provide basic dysrhythmia interpretation and treatment, as well as basic and advanced life support.
• Perform drug dosage calculations, administer continuous medication infusions, and monitor medication effects (e.g., vasoactive agents, platelet inhibitors, antiarrhythmic agents, insulin).
• Monitor patients using standardized procedures for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care (e.g., cardiac catheterization with percutaneous coronary intervention, chest tube insertion).
• Care for patients with tracheotomies and perform hemodynamic monitoring, including equipment setup, troubleshooting, and recognition of patient instability.
• Recognize signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary emergencies and initiate standardized interventions.
• Interpret arterial blood gas analysis and communicate findings.
• Manage patients requiring noninvasive oxygen delivery systems (e.g., oral airways, BiPAP, CPAP).
• Recognize indications for and complications of enteral and parenteral nutrition.
• Assess, monitor, and manage patients requiring renal therapeutic interventions (e.g., hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, stents, continuous bladder irrigation, urostomies).
• Complete 12-lead EKGs and cardiac rehab exercises.
• Draw blood from arterial lines.
• Assess and report physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect.
• Maintain department cleanliness and demonstrate proper application of external pacemakers.
• Evaluate and address family needs for enhanced involvement in care to facilitate transition from hospital to home.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
• Evidence of participation in educational programs to update and maintain current knowledge and clinical skills.
• Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills.
• Previous nursing experience in the specialty area preferred.
• Specific experience requirements vary by unit:
  • Cath Lab: One year of acute care nursing experience (ED, Cath Lab, CCU, IMCU, Tele-Observation).
  • Cardiac Rehab: Two years of Critical Care and/or Progressive Care experience.
  • Cardiovascular Services: Two years of experience reading cardiac monitors and responding to abnormalities or codes.
  • Device Clinic: At least one year of device management services and successful completion of an EKG course.
  • Tele-Observation, IMCU, CCU, Cath Lab, ED: At least two years of acute care nursing experience.
  • Emergency Department: At least one year of RN experience in ED or Critical Care.
  • Family Birthing Services: Minimum of one year Labor and Delivery experience (within the last five years). For trainee positions, at least one year of RN experience in ICU, CCU, IMCU, or ED.
  • Infusion Services: Six months of infusion nursing experience and six months of Midline/PICC experience.
  • Wound Care Center: Two years of experience in wound care; advanced wound care initiatives preferred.
  • Outpatient Behavioral Health Services: Two years of Behavioral/Psychiatric nursing experience; outpatient setting preferred.
  • Rapid Admission: One year of acute care experience and successful completion of an EKG course within six months of hire.
  • SDS/PACU: Experience reading cardiac monitors and responding to abnormalities or codes; recent clinical experience with CPR and ability to lead a Code Blue.
  • Medical Surgical (Renal, Oncology, Pediatrics): Pediatric experience preferred.
  • Level II NICU: Minimum of one year NICU experience (within the last five years). For trainee positions, at least two years in NICU Level 1, Labor and Delivery, Post-Partum, Nursery, PICU, ICU, ED, or CCU, or new graduate RN with practicum/capstone in Labor and Delivery, Nursery, or NICU.
• Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training in accordance with Act 31 of 2014.
• Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Clearance and fingerprinting.

Qualifications

• Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania.
• Certification in specialty preferred.
• CPR certification required.
• ACLS required for Cardiovascular Services, CCU, Device Clinic, Emergency, IMCU, Family Birthing Services, Tele-Observation, PACU/SDS, or achieved within one year of start date.
• ACLS required for Cardiac Rehab or achieved within three months of hire/transfer.
• Proficiency in cardiac monitor interpretation, conscious sedation, and ACLS required for Cath Lab or achieved within six months of hire/transfer.
• ACLS required for Float Pool.
• PALS required for Emergency, PACU, and Pediatric trained staff within one year from start date.
• PALS and Conscious Sedation required for SDS or achieved within four months of hire/transfer.
• CNOR preferred for OR.
• CPAN/CAPA preferred for PACU/SDS.
• CRRN preferred for Rehabilitation Medicine.
• NRP required for Level II NICU.
• NRP and Fetal Monitoring education required for Family Birthing Services within one year from start date.
• PMH-BC preferred for Behavioral Health Services (inpatient and outpatient).
• Proficiency in cardiac monitor interpretation required for PACU/SDS, IMCU, Tele-Observation, CCU, Cardiac Rehab, Cardiovascular Services, Cath Lab, and Emergency.
• WOCNCB or CWCN preferred for Wound Care Center.

Schedule

• Full time (72 hours biweekly).
• 12-hour Day/Night shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM).
• Every third weekend.
• Eligible for shift and weekend differential.
