About the role

A Clinical Nurse II (CN II) is a competent clinician who provides nursing care in a skilled and effective manner. A CNII independently prioritizes and delivers dependable and effective patient care in a variety of patient situations using the nursing process and utilizing appropriate decision-making skills. A CNII exhibits competence in the technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required to independently and safely manage routine patient assignments.

The Clinical Nurse II begins to develop mentorship skillsets under the leadership of experienced and expert clinicians on their unit, driving the mentee-mentor relationship to identify gaps in skills, practice, and knowledge to achieve desired goals. A CNII establishes a plan of care, sets goals, determines priorities, and provides care within established standards of practice.

The scope of responsibility, duties, and accountability includes knowledge and practice of the clinical/technical skills necessary for the position, consistent with the Nurse Practice Act, Title 22, The Joint Commission, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care in a variety of patient situations using the nursing process.
  • Independently prioritize and deliver dependable and effective patient care.
  • Exhibit competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills for routine patient assignments.
  • Develop mentorship skills to support less experienced clinicians.
  • Establish a plan of care, set goals, and determine priorities within standards of practice.
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements, including the Nurse Practice Act and The Joint Commission standards.

Requirements

  • 1 year of acute care experience in specialty (for external hires).
  • Promotion to Clinical Nurse II requires completion of one (1) year of clinical experience and a satisfactory performance appraisal at a Clinical Nurse I level.

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree or College Diploma in Nursing (minimum).
  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (preferred).

Skills & Certifications

  • California State RN License (required upon hire).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (required upon hire).
  • Additional certifications as required by specialty unit (minimum 1 year).
