Registered Nurse II - Labor & Delivery
About the Role
Provides nursing care to patients using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). Directs and leads other assigned team members and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to provide age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with nursing standards of care and practice. Delivers patient/family centered care focusing on physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. Responsibilities include assessment, development of nursing diagnoses, outcome identification, planning, implementation of interventions, coordination of care, health teaching and promotion, and evaluation of goals and interventions consistent with MUSC policies.
Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior. Functions in a professional setting through active participation in a professional practice model, including shared governance, adherence to standards of care, peer review, professional development, leadership, clinical excellence, effective team skills, autonomous practice, and accountability for actions and critical thinking.
Coordinates the effective and efficient delivery of patient care services through care management principles. Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes. Demonstrates ability to function in a professional practice model through active participation in shared governance, promotion of a healthy work environment, and acceptance of personal responsibility for professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized, goal-directed patient care at the competent level using the principles and practices of the nursing process.
- Deliver safe and effective care, interacting with healthcare team members to achieve desired results.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in alignment with MUSC policies.
- Coordinate care and apply care management principles to improve patient outcomes.
- Participate in shared governance, peer review, and professional development to promote leadership and clinical excellence.
- Maintain patient privacy and a safe, therapeutic environment.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including dietitians and pediatric pharmacists, as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013, with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing must enroll in an accredited BSN program within two years and obtain a BSN degree within four years of hire or reclassification date.
- Minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse.
- Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Providers.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, or walking continuously.
- Ability to climb stairs infrequently.
- Ability to work indoors continuously and outside in temperature extremes infrequently.
- Ability to work from elevated areas frequently and in confined/cramped spaces frequently.
- Ability to perform job functions from kneeling positions infrequently and bending at the waist continuously.
- Ability to twist at the waist frequently and squat frequently.
- Ability to perform pinching, gross motor, and fine manipulation operations with fingers and hands continuously.
- Ability to reach overhead frequently and in all directions continuously.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders continuously.
- Ability to fully use both legs continuously and use lower extremities for balance and coordination frequently.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted infrequently and lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted infrequently.
- Ability to lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. infrequently.
- Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force frequently (e.g., transferring patients, pushing wheelchairs or stretchers).
- Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one or both eyes continuously.
- Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance, match or discriminate between colors, and determine depth perception continuously.
- Good peripheral vision capabilities continuously.
- Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction, continuously.
- Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements continuously.
- Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime as required, and in a latex-safe environment frequently/continuously.
- Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions continuously.
- Selected positions may require maintaining good olfactory sensory function or being qualified physically for respirator use continuously.
Pay
Hourly pay grade: Health-28.
Schedule
- 36 scheduled weekly hours.
- 3-12 hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
