About the role
The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department is responsible for initial patient assessments, performing laboratory work, point-of-care testing, and administrative tasks associated with delivering patient care. This role collaborates with physicians on discharge plans, educates patients upon discharge, and facilitates the transfer of admitted patients.
Responsibilities
- Triages patients in the Emergency Department, prioritizing care based on the critical nature and severity of their condition.
- Assesses patient condition through visual evaluation, medication reconciliation, and vital sign measurements (e.g., blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, temperature) throughout their stay.
- Administers medication and assists with medical procedures as prescribed by the treating physician.
- Monitors patients for changes in condition and communicates effectively with the care team in compliance with policies and regulations.
- Partners with the patient care team to provide procedures, interventions, discharge, or admission processes.
- Charts patient medical history, contact information, condition, medications, and treatment, updating the electronic medical record accurately and consistently.
- Discharges patients post-treatment, providing instructions, education, and confirming transportation.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse Program (required by date of hire).
- Minimum of two (2) years of Critical Care experience.
- Two (2) years of Emergency Department experience (preferred).
Qualifications
- American Heart Association certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – upon date of hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – within 90 days of hire or transfer.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – within 90 days of hire or transfer.
- Registered Nurse license to practice in the state of Indiana (required upon hire).
- Preferred certifications: CEN, TNCC, ENPC, NRP.
- Preferred education: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Nursing.
