Registered Nurse Emergency Department PRN

Unit: The MUSC Orangeburg Emergency Department is a Level III Trauma Center with 43 treatment areas, serving the communities of Orangeburg, Calhoun, Bamberg, and Barnwell counties for acute healthcare needs.

About the role

Provide professional nursing care within the Emergency Department and coordinate care planning with other disciplines. Work alongside a diverse healthcare team utilizing research and best practices to deliver optimal patient care.

Work environment includes regular exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, accidents, injuries, and varying emergency situations. Occasional exposure to radiation and irregular hours may occur.

Responsibilities

• Document initial nursing histories, assess patients’ conditions per policy, and develop individualized care plans addressing physical, psycho-social, environmental, cultural, and spiritual needs.
• Assist physicians with examinations, procedures, and other direct patient care processes according to established policies.
• Evaluate patient care outcomes, consult with specialists as needed, and revise care plans to optimize results.
• Coordinate discharge planning and monitor/record patients’ conditions.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and use an interdisciplinary approach to formulate and evaluate teaching plans (including family education).
• Coordinate ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients.
• Communicate patient condition during hand-offs and perform charge duties after six months of experience and appropriate training.
• Conduct patient rounds per policy to improve clinical outcomes.
• Orient or mentor new staff members and provide effective listening to facilitate care requirements.
• Serve as first-line customer service response and adhere to MUSC Standards of Behaviors.
• Supervise LPNs, CNAs, WS, Techs, and MOAs.
• Demonstrate financial stewardship of supplies and resources.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the director of nursing, charge nurse, or medical staff.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred.
• Current RN license in the state of South Carolina.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
• Some clinical or hospital experience preferred but not required.

Skills

• Ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, talk, hear, and smell for up to twelve (12) hours.
• Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 35 pounds; safe patient handling equipment is provided for transfers exceeding this limit.
• Close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision required.
• Ability to read, interpret, and write reports, correspondence, or manuals.
• Ability to perform math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, averages, volume, ratios) and interpret graphs.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to interpret verbal, nonverbal, and written instructions and deal with concrete/abstract concepts.
• Strong multitasking and prioritization skills to manage patient care responsibilities.
• Effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare teams from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Population Served

This position primarily interacts with all age groups, providing direct patient care. Staff must demonstrate knowledge and skills to meet the physical, psycho-social, educational, safety, and related needs of patients and their families.

Schedule

PRN (as needed) position with a scheduled weekly average of 6 hours.

Pay

Hourly pay rate at Health-28 pay grade.
