Registered Nurse Emergency Department Per Diem Nights

About the role

Part-time night position in the Emergency Department at South Shore Hospital, Weymouth, MA. Requires a minimum of 48 hours (six 8-hour shifts) per 4-week period, including two weekend shifts and two major holidays (one summer and one winter).

Responsibilities

• Manages individualized, outcome-oriented nursing care using the nursing process: assessment, planning, providing care, in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
• Administers, transcribes, and records medications per SSH policies; completes medication reconciliation; documents narcotic administration, verifies count, wastes per policy, and resolves discrepancies.
• Develops, discusses, and communicates a prioritized problem list/plan of care for each patient; initiates admission assessment within 8 hours; identifies and documents patient/family teaching needs; updates plan of care and documents outcomes.
• Continues assessment/reassessment; documents care following department of nursing policy, unit standards, disease processes (e.g., CHF, PNA vaccines), and nurse-sensitive indicators (falls, skin, CAUTI).
• Assesses and documents patient comfort using appropriate pain scales and responses to interventions; advocates for patient/family and raises ethical concerns with the clinical team.
• Communicates plan of day via white board each shift; facilitates discharge/transfer by 12:00pm and escalates barriers using chain of command.
• Fosters a “Culture of Safety”: verifies patient identification with two identifiers before invasive procedures; performs “time out”; complies with CDC hand hygiene; adheres to universal precautions and proper PPE use; maintains awareness of MSDS sheets; ensures environment meets regulatory requirements; understands roles in hospital codes/emergency preparedness.
• Assumes responsibility for professional development: incorporates evidence-based practice, research, and performance improvement; obtains at least 5 contact hours per year in area of practice; practices within MA Nurse Practice Act; directs licensed and non-licensed personnel as assigned; responds appropriately to feedback.
• Demonstrates critical thinking: analyzes problems, evaluates alternatives, selects solutions, and communicates via chain of command; stays informed about policy/procedure changes.
• Uses technological solutions: accesses Lotus Notes for email and learning resources; operates required software; understands downtime procedures.
• Works within legal, regulatory, and ethical standards; safeguards patient information; complies with privacy/security policies; reports potential compliance issues.
• Delivers patient- and family-centered care: respects values and preferences; includes patient/family as members of the care team; welcomes family presence at all times per patient preference.
• Applies age and cultural awareness; interacts sensitively with diverse populations; utilizes interpreter services and online resources as needed.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
• Previous acute care RN experience preferred.
• Current MA RN license.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (AHA).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification (AHA).
• Additional certifications may be required depending on department: Emergency Response Training (ERT), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR).
