Registered Nurse - Emergency Department - Day/Eve/Night

About the Role

PRN position requiring a minimum of 24 hours off shift per 6-week schedule. 12-hour day/evening/night shifts with weekend and holiday work as needed. Shift and weekend differential eligibility.

Unit Details

  • 30-bed Emergency Care Unit
  • Rapid paced, high acuity unit with 155 visits per day; over 55,000 annual visits
  • ACLS, PALS, and EKG provided
  • Orientation program facilitated by a Clinical Educator, focused on Emergency Nursing especially for the novice nurse
  • Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) orientation curriculum offered (online)

Responsibilities

  • Implement, direct and coordinate care of patients through the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Recognize and treat physical and psychosocial changes unique to the age/population group served
  • Demonstrate safe medication practice
  • Maintain a professional image that reflects the employee's role in health care
  • Complete chart check to ensure no missed orders
  • Accurately transcribe physician's orders
  • Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills
  • Assess patient education needs and use patient education resources
  • Attend 50% of staff/committee meetings and in-services for area
  • Demonstrate leadership through the nursing process and supervision while maintaining accountability for treatment and patient outcomes
  • Act as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation and teaching of staff
  • Respond to delays in a calm manner; apologize for inconveniences and give alternatives
  • Analyze assessment data, identify priority problems and document on Plan of Care for patients, families and significant others
  • Use effective problem-solving skills to plan patient care
  • Identify critical factors evidencing changes in patient condition and respond appropriately
  • Complete and document discharge assessment against plan of care goals
  • Initiate and maintain Intravenous Therapy according to IV standards
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations
  • Utilize proper body mechanics to prevent injury to self and others
  • Safely position, transfer and transport patients
  • Function as a virtual nurse as assigned, including admissions, discharges, education, documentation through a virtual platform, and collaborative work with bedside nursing staff

Emergency Department Specific Duties

  • Complete accurate initial triage to ESI and department standards
  • Perform thorough and accurate chief complaint specific assessments on all age groups
  • Assess and identify patients for indications of physical, sexual, or psychological abuse and initiate appropriate follow-up
  • Implement advanced emergency skills to ED patients
  • Collaboratively coordinate with other departments and disciplines to meet patient's needs
  • Achieve credentialing in conscious sedation annually and demonstrate appropriate clinical performance
  • Attend annual skills day for unit specific competencies and reviews
  • Early identification and expedient processing of AMI patients to cath lab to meet benchmark door to balloon times
  • Demonstrate appropriate technique of accessing, maintaining, and de-accessing indwelling ports
  • Accurately complete and transmit 12 lead EKG's
  • Demonstrate proper set up and verbalize proper nursing care during and after insertion of chest tube
  • Demonstrate proficient phlebotomy skills on all age groups and follow procedures for patient identification and specimen labeling
  • Demonstrate proper use of Lifepak in all functions
  • Properly identify patients by chief complaint and initiate department protocols in collaboration with ED Physician
  • Demonstrate proper application of restraints in the ED setting and complete required documentation timely and accurately
  • Documentation thorough and complete as evidenced by random chart audits

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • Evidence of participation in educational programs to update and maintain current knowledge and clinical skills

Experience

  • Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required
  • At least one year of RN experience in ED or Critical Care required

Certifications & Licensure

  • Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania
  • Certification in specialty preferred
  • CPR certification required
  • ACLS required or achieved within one year of start date
  • PALS required within one year from start date
  • Proficiency in cardiac monitor interpretation required
  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training in accordance with Act31 of 2014 required
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Clearance and finger printing required
