About the Role

This position is the lead level of work responsible for nursing care in a ward on an assigned shift at a court-involved facility. The role involves assigning, reviewing, and approving the work of, as well as training, Registered Nurses, Security Attendants Nursing, or Licensed Practical Nurses assigned to the ward for a shift. The position receives general supervision from a higher-level Nurse and is assigned to day, evening, night, or rotating shifts, which may include holidays and weekends. This role is subject to call-in during emergencies and staffing shortages.

The work is performed at a court-involved facility providing care to mentally ill patients who have been judged not criminally responsible for committing felonies, as well as those who are difficult to manage in less secure settings and deemed dangerous to themselves or others. The position requires observing infection control precautions, may involve lifting patients or applying restraints, and may require long periods of standing, walking, bending, and reaching.

This position is differentiated from the Registered Nurse, CI in that it leads assigned staff, including Registered Nurses, on a designated shift. It is also differentiated from the Registered Nurse Supervisor, CI, who is responsible for 24-hour supervision of a ward or acts as a shift supervisor for several wards.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise nursing care in a ward on an assigned shift.
• Assign, review, and approve the work of Registered Nurses, Security Attendants Nursing, or Licensed Practical Nurses.
• Train nursing staff assigned to the ward for a shift.
• Provide direct nursing care to mentally ill patients in a court-involved facility.
• Observe infection control precautions to prevent contamination and spread of disease.
• Lift patients or apply restraints as required.
• Respond to call-ins during emergencies and staffing shortages.

Requirements

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Nursing under the licensing requirements for Registered Nurses.

Experience: Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, one year of which must have been in a psychiatric setting.

• Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited college or university for the one year of general experience.
• Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in nursing or a health-related field from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing and Hospital Administration specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

• Current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, or a current multi-state license in party states where the candidate has declared primary residence.
• If assigned duties require operation of a motor vehicle, a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland is required.
• May be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.
