About the Role

Fairview is hiring a Registered Nurse for the Cardiac/Respiratory Intermediate Care Unit at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center – East Bank in Minneapolis, MN. This casual position provides care to patients 18 years and older with moderate to potentially severe physiologic instability, requiring frequent nursing assessment and intervention every 1 to 2 hours. This fast-paced environment offers training to deliver professional, culturally competent nursing care for high-acuity patients across a wide range of diagnoses and specialties.

About the Department

The Cardiac/Respiratory IMC is a 22-bed unit with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 or 1:3 on all shifts. Patients require cardiac monitoring and respiratory support, up to and including mechanical ventilation. Common patient populations include:

  • Post-op transplant
  • Acute and chronic respiratory failure
  • Sepsis
  • End-stage organ failure
  • Cardiac complications (titratable cardiac drips, ventricular assist device)
  • Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery

Nurse Residency Program

The Nurse Residency Program bridges the gap between academia and clinical practice for new grad/novice nurses. It offers:

  • Structured Learning: 8 hours of learning every 2 months for 12 months, covering time management, interprofessional teaming, communication, wellbeing, social determinants of health, and critical thinking.
  • Mentorship: Multiple opportunities for guidance and support.
  • Networking: Connect with peers and collaborate on practice-based learning.
  • Hands-On Experience: Clinical experiences and pilot virtual reality for formative learning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional nursing care following established standards and practices in a fast-paced Progressive ICU.
  • Assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate nursing care for assigned patient populations.
  • Coordinate care with members of the healthcare team and delegate responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Assist physicians and staff in coordinating patient care.
  • Perform duties in accordance with policies, procedures, professional practice guidelines, and the MN Nurse Practice Act.

Requirements

  • Active MN RN License
  • BLS certification
  • AD (Associate Degree) in Nursing required

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSN or higher preferred
  • Certification in a related specialty is highly desired
  • One year of current medical/surgical with telemetry experience as an RN in a hospital setting
  • One year of Emergency Department, pediatric, or adult critical care experience
  • Certification by the American Association of Critical Care Nursing or a related specialty
