About the Role

The Registered Nurse (OR) collaborates with physicians, scrub technicians, and anesthesia healthcare providers to determine patient needs during surgical procedures, assume responsibility for patient care, document and evaluate nursing actions, and ensure a safe environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct nursing care by assessing patients' physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual status.
  • Develops and implements a plan of care consistent with the patient's condition, annotating medical records per established procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Includes patients and families in care planning and performs comprehensive patient assessments, adjusting care as needed.
  • Administers treatments, medications, and general care according to the nursing plan, best practices, and medical orders.
  • Operates specialized medical equipment and evaluates patient responses to care, revising the treatment plan as necessary.
  • Coordinates care with other departments (e.g., dietary, social services, rehab) to ensure timely service delivery.
  • Provides education to patients and families about medications, treatments, disease-specific information, and follow-up care.
  • Participates in discharge planning with healthcare providers and community resources to address patient needs.
  • Engages in Quality Assurance activities to ensure optimal care and follow-up for patients.
  • Ensures continuity of care through comprehensive handoffs during transitions (shift changes, transfers, etc.).
  • Participates in a multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care and advocates for patient rights.
  • Accepts accountability for education on policies, procedures, and patient care information.
  • Participates in continuing education and in-service training to provide appropriate nursing care.
  • Complies with hospital policies, procedures, and performance improvement processes.
  • Precepts and mentors newer staff to ensure proper orientation.
  • Attends mandatory in-services and staff meetings.
  • Ensures all instruments, equipment, and supplies are available for procedures.
  • Communicates patient conditions during the perioperative period with the healthcare team.
  • Applies correct cleaning and disinfection protocols for equipment.
  • Accurately labels and handles specimens, documenting them in the Pathology logbook.
  • Demonstrates appropriate medication use and follows administration policies.
  • Utilizes the nursing process and AORN standards to incorporate patient safety goals.
  • Applies principles of aseptic technique and maintains sterile field integrity.
  • Demonstrates safe and effective use of surgical equipment, including autoclave for Immediate Use Steam Sterilization (IUSS).

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in an Operating Room required.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing required.
  • Current New York State RN licensure required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • CNOR Certification preferred.
