About the Role

This Psychiatric Registered Nurse position is located at Bradley Hospital in Riverside, RI on the Adolescent Inpatient Unit. This part-time day position is 24 hours per week. The role involves providing acute and long-term nursing care to children and adolescents, utilizing the nursing process within the context of program, department, and hospital standards. Responsibilities

• Provides direct nursing and patient care services through application of the nursing process by assessing patient’s immediate and long-term needs.
• Initiates biopsychosocial assessment of patients’ acute nursing needs guided by admission procedure; documents in required patient medical records format.
• Assures completion of the nursing assessment form within 8 hours of admission for assigned patient.
• Communicates significant changes in assessment findings to the nurse in charge and other appropriate health care providers; summarizes patient’s status in team meetings and reports.
• Plans treatment interventions with the patient, family, and health care team; initiates patient care plan at the time of admission and completes it within 8 hours.
• Develops and updates the patient care plan each shift to reflect patient status, including:
  • Formulating patient and family treatment goals.
  • Identifying nursing interventions based on treatment goals.
  • Identifying patient/family strengths.
  • Identifying inpatient and aftercare needs.
  • Formulating measurable short and long-term goals with timelines.
• Implements nursing care based on individual patient needs; establishes and maintains a therapeutic alliance.
• Serves as a patient advocate by supporting the Patient Bill of Rights and child mental health law.
• Administers and documents prescribed medications (scheduled/PRN’s) according to medical protocol; assesses and documents effectiveness and side-effects.
• Accurately transcribes and implements physician orders according to prescribed medical protocol.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions and modifies as needed; seeks consultation through established lines of supervision.
• Participates in quality assurance data collection and contributes to the program-based nursing quality assurance program.
• Participates in the ongoing development and implementation of the therapeutic milieu, including:
  • Providing milieu management by assessing and responding to acute needs of the patient group.
  • Ensuring safety of the environment and managing patient and staff interactions.
  • Responding to requests for assistance beyond the unit level when directed.
  • Providing leadership in acute or emergency situations as part of the Emergency Response Team.
  • Leading and co-leading therapeutic milieu groups and supporting individual patient participation.
• Supervises Milieu Therapists and support staff according to their scope of practice and Joint Commission standards.
• Prioritizes interventions in rapidly changing patient situations to optimize patient welfare.
• Provides consistent leadership when assigned as nurse in charge.
• Identifies and provides for teaching needs of patients, families, and other health care providers; documents teaching needs and responses in patient records.
• Assists in the orientation of new employees and students; provides impromptu instruction and demonstration of therapeutic techniques and nursing procedures.
• Maintains commitment to professional growth and competency through ongoing activities, including:
  • Managing time effectively and prioritizing urgent issues.
  • Following through on commitments and assigned projects.
  • Documenting required materials and disseminating to appropriate parties.
  • Keeping current with changes in the hospital and program by participating in staff meetings and reviewing new policies.
  • Identifying specific short and long-term professional goals with supervisor.
• Adheres to Hospital, Department, and Program policies and procedures, including:
  • Attending six Program meetings per year as assigned.
  • Maintaining current certification in crisis management and BLS.
  • Attending Program staff development and monthly Program Development Day presentations.

Requirements

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement.
• Graduate of a school of nursing.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
• One year of psychiatric nursing and/or pediatric nursing experience preferred.
• Strong background and experience working with students with emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as developmental disabilities such as intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorders.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Work is performed in a psychology-based clinical setting requiring extensive standing, walking, and occasional lifting of patients.

Pay

$35.70 - $71.40 per hour.

Schedule

• Part-time, 24 hours per week.
• Shift: 7:00 am - 7:30 pm, 2 days per week.
• Every other weekend (EOW) and every other holiday (EOH) as assigned.
• 12-hour shifts.
