Registered Nurse - Ambulatory Subspecialty Care Float

Primary locations include Burnet and Liberty Campuses; additional ambulatory locations may be assigned based on operational needs.

About the role

Cincinnati Children’s is seeking an experienced and adaptable Registered Nurse II, Ambulatory Float to provide high-quality nursing care across a broad range of ambulatory subspecialty clinics. This role offers an exciting opportunity to develop and maintain clinical expertise across multiple pediatric subspecialties while supporting the changing needs of ambulatory care. You will work with diverse patient populations, clinical teams, and workflows while providing safe, compassionate, family-centered care.

As an Ambulatory Float RN, you will progressively orient to multiple ambulatory subspecialty areas based on clinical readiness, organizational priorities, and operational needs. You will assume independent assignments after completing the appropriate specialty-specific orientation and competency validation.

Responsibilities

• Provide safe, high-quality nursing care across assigned ambulatory subspecialty clinics following completion of appropriate orientation and competency validation.
• Develop and maintain clinical competencies across multiple ambulatory specialties and patient populations.
• Adapt to different clinical environments, patient populations, workflows, team structures, and operational needs.
• Collaborate with nurses, providers, clinical leaders, educators, medical assistants, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Perform patient assessments, provide nursing interventions, administer medications and treatments, and support patient and family education within the ambulatory setting.
• Utilize specialty-specific resources, workflows, protocols, and just-in-time education when transitioning between clinical areas.
• Recognize individual scope of practice and competency limitations and appropriately seek guidance or escalate concerns when needed.
• Maintain required competencies and participate in ongoing education as clinical practices, technologies, and patient care needs evolve.
• Communicate proactively regarding assignment readiness, clinical concerns, workflow barriers, and support needs.
• Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism when transitioning between ambulatory subspecialty environments.
• Contribute to consistent, high-quality patient care across ambulatory locations and specialties.
• Provide constructive feedback regarding orientation, workflows, resources, and processes to support the continued development of the Ambulatory Float RN role.
• Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Support leadership in Compliance efforts to meet and sustain the regulatory compliance efforts of the department and hospital.
• Be mindful and judicious in monitoring safety and departmental policies and procedures. Ensure all individual certifications and Safety College requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis.
• Work with department managers, nurse council, and magnet representatives to identify and share safety best practices.
• Demonstrate consistent integration of the Interprofessional Practice Model (IPM) in all aspects of practice.
• Follow standards and guidelines; implement clinical changes and research-based practices developed by others.
• Use self-appraisal, performance review, and peer review, including annual goal setting, for assurance of competence and professional development.
• Demonstrate openness to coaching and mentoring from others. Facilitate learning by assisting with peer and student learning experiences.
• See the pieces or components; see patient and family within the isolated environment of the unit; see self as key resource to support the family through the healthcare experience through care coordination.
• Consistently integrate age-specific and culturally inclusive concepts into patient care, taking into consideration both the patient's chronological age and developmental functioning.
• Collaborate with the team using shared decision-making. Participate in shared governance at the point-of-care as a member of unit-based councils.
• Collect clinical data; follow algorithms, decision trees, and protocols. Match formal knowledge with clinical events to make appropriate decisions.
• Document plan of care, care delivered, and patient and family outcomes. Focus on the usual and customary needs of the patient and family.
• Work on behalf of patient and family; assess personal values; aware of ethical conflicts/issues that may surface in clinical setting.
• Assess cultural inclusion. Recognize the potential impact of culture on the patient/family experience and incorporate culturally inclusive concepts into patient care.

Requirements

• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Ohio.
• 2 years nursing experience.
• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); BSN preferred.
• Demonstrated clinical nursing experience.
• Strong assessment, critical-thinking, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing clinical environments and patient care needs.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to providing compassionate, family-centered pediatric care.

Qualifications

• Associate/Diploma prepared RNs from ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA accredited institution requires 2+ years of experience. If hired without a BSN or MSN, must enroll in a BSN or MSN program within 1 year of hire date/RN job date and complete program within 5 years of hire/RN job date.
• Preferred: BSN from ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA accredited institution or MSN.
• Active Ohio RN License. May be required to obtain other state licensure.

Preferred

• Pediatric nursing experience.
• Ambulatory or outpatient nursing experience.
• Experience working across multiple specialties or clinical environments.
• Strong interest in developing broad pediatric ambulatory nursing expertise.
• Demonstrated ability to learn new clinical workflows, technologies, and specialty-specific competencies.
