Registered Nurse, Ambulatory Pediatrics, 36 Hours (Days/Evenings)

About the Role

The pediatric ambulatory RN is an integral member of the patient's healthcare team, responsible for performing outpatient care for patients with specialty diagnoses. The role involves coordinating and managing care for specialty clinic patients, including newly diagnosed, established, high-risk, and noncompliant patients. The RN stays up-to-date on current ambulatory therapies and research, promotes self-management skills, and provides collaborative and comprehensive care to optimize patient management of their illness. The practice complies with hospital policy, procedures, and protocols in accordance with the provider's plan of care. The RN acts as a patient and family advocate, establishing trust and building therapeutically effective relationships.

The registered nurse adheres to the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing and is primarily responsible for professional performance and direct patient care. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and their families across the health care continuum. The registered nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes using the model of care designed by the nursing department.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and manage care for specialty clinic patients, including newly diagnosed, established, high-risk, and noncompliant patients.
• Promote self-management skills and provide collaborative, comprehensive care to optimize patient outcomes.
• Practice in compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and protocols, and in accordance with the provider’s plan of care.
• Act as a patient and family advocate, establishing trust and building therapeutically effective relationships.
• Perform nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families.
• Demonstrate strong clinical judgment and expertise in assessing and managing children and adolescents with developmental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, intellectual and developmental disabilities, learning disorders, behavioral health conditions).
• Navigate special education systems and school districts, including the IEP and 504 processes, and partner with families to access educational supports.
• Collaborate with families, providers, schools, behavioral health agencies, and community organizations to coordinate evaluations, therapies, specialty care, and resources.
• Utilize standardized developmental and behavioral screening tools, including autism-specific screeners, to identify concerns and facilitate referrals.
• Work within an interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and support transitions across services.
• Perform PIV care and management for pediatric and adult populations (if applicable).
• Conduct telephone triage for symptomatic patients.
• Demonstrate knowledge of childhood/adult immunizations, durable medical equipment (DME), visiting nurse associations (VNA), prior authorizations (PA), and school forms.

Requirements

• Nursing degree: Diploma, ASN, or BSN (BSN preferred). Ability to obtain BSN within 4 years if not already held.
• Current RN licensure in the state of Massachusetts or ability to obtain reciprocity prior to start.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• PALS certification preferred.
• 3-5 years of inpatient pediatric experience.
• 1-2 years of experience in an ambulatory clinic, outpatient, or diagnostic testing setting preferred.

Skills

• Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data.
• Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with healthcare team members, patients, and families.
• Strong organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
• Multilingual skills (beyond English) preferred for languages appropriate to the patient population served.
• Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty certification required for certain practice areas.
• Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement research.
• Ability to effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the patient populations served.
• Physical ability to meet core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands.
• Experience with care coordination and transitions of care in ambulatory practice.
• Knowledge of population health and its relevance to practice.

Pay

Compensation range: $38.05 - $75.33 per hour. This range is based on minimum job qualifications, with actual offers determined by factors such as education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to the position.

Schedule

Full-time, 36 hours per week. Schedule includes days, evenings, and rotating Saturdays.
