About the Role

The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients during a designated time frame. The RN provides safe, quality care utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice. This position is part of the Maternal Child Float Pool and may be assigned to any patient‑care area.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit.
  • Assume charge nurse duties when needed, including patient assignments based on acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and admission/discharge activity.
  • Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel on unit, department, and hospital policies, procedures, and annual goals.
  • Integrate new and agency staff into the unit culture and serve as a clinical role model.
  • Act as a clinical resource and demonstrate safe use of patient‑care equipment, teaching others as needed.
  • Monitor and evaluate nursing care through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
  • Assess unit and environmental safety during rounds and correct deficiencies.
  • Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; routinely monitor documentation and compliance.
  • Provide excellent customer service, respond to patient and family concerns, and report significant events per policy.
  • Contribute to performance appraisals of clinical staff by documenting feedback and communicating concerns.
  • Manage staffing coverage for breaks and maintain fiscal responsibility by adjusting staffing levels during the shift.
  • Maintain personal competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
  • Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite patient placement.

Requirements

  • BSN preferred.
  • Current Washington State RN licensure.
  • Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation **or** at least six months of RN experience.
  • Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • For advancement to Charge Nurse role: two years of clinical nursing/leadership experience preferred.

Unit Specific Requirements

  • Maternal Child Float Pool: NRP certification within 3 months of hire; minimum 1 year mother‑baby or Level II NICU experience (including CPAP) or competency within 6 months.
  • Medical‑Surgical Float Pool: 3 months Med/Surg RN experience or residency; ECG interpretation course within 6 months; 1 year Med/Surg experience.
  • Medical‑Surgical Neurology/Stroke Unit: ECG interpretation course within 6 months; NIHSS certification within 3 months; 8 hours neuro education within 12 months and annually thereafter.
  • Labor & Delivery/Resident: NRP certification within 3 months; ACLS within 3 months; Intermediate/Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification.
  • Endoscopy: ACLS within 3 months; 6 months endoscopy experience or 1 year Med/Surg experience.
  • General Medicine (Chemotherapy): Chemotherapy certification within 12 months (not required for per‑diems).
  • Emergency Department/Resident: ACLS & PALS within 3 months; NIHSS within 3 months; TNCC within 12 months; ENPC within 12 months; 1 year Emergency nursing experience preferred or successful ED residency.
  • Critical Care/Resident: ACLS within 3 months; NIHSS within 3 months; minimum 1 year Critical Care, PACU, or Emergency experience.
  • Electrophysiology: 2 years EP Lab and/or Cath Lab experience preferred; Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist preferred.
  • Perioperative Resource Team: ACLS & PALS within 3 months; completion of PRT orientation within 12 months; PACU experience preferred.
  • Other specialties (e.g., Oncology, OR, SPCU, etc.) include specific certification and experience requirements as listed in the posting.

Pay

Salary range: $48.82 – $89.19 per hour (depending on experience).

Schedule

Shift: Days. Full‑time position at 0.9 FTE.

Location

VMC Main Campus, Renton, WA.
