Job Overview
The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. This individual provides safe, quality care to these patients utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice.
Prerequisites
- BSN preferred.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Washington.
- Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months’ experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Essential Responsibilities
- Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit.
- Recognize when the charge nurse role is needed and assume patient assignments accordingly.
- Make staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and admission/discharge activity.
- Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel on unit/hospital policies, procedures, standards, and annual goals.
- Integrate new and agency staff into the unit culture; act as a leader and role model.
- Serve as a clinical resource and demonstrate safe use of patient‑care equipment, teaching others as needed.
- Identify as a resource for other care teams when necessary.
- Monitor and evaluate nursing care through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
- Assess unit/environmental safety during rounds and correct deficiencies.
- Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts.
- Routinely monitor documentation compliance and facilitate rapid turnaround cycles.
- Provide excellent customer service; respond to patient and family concerns/complaints.
- Report significant events and activate the chain of command per policy.
- Provide input for performance appraisals of clinical staff on the assigned shift.
- Evaluate and provide adequate coverage for breaks; adjust staffing to maintain fiscal responsibility.
- Maintain personal competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
- Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite patient placement.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Safe patient handling per VMC guidelines; lift/carry items up to 40 lb, may require team lifting.
- Operate patient‑lifting equipment accurately and safely.
- Stooping, bending, reaching, crouching, squatting, and extensive standing/walking.
- Full‑body range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination.
- Corrected vision and hearing within normal range; ability to distinguish colors.
Unit‑Specific Requirements (selected examples)
- Admit and discharge certifications (ACLS & PALS) within 3 months of hire.
- Preferred experience in perianesthesia, med/surg, CCU/ED, critical care, EP lab, labor & delivery, OR, oncology, etc., as detailed in the addendum.
- Specific certifications (NIHSS, TNCC, ENPC, NRP, OCN, etc.) required or preferred within defined time frames.
- Experience requirements range from 6 months to 2 years depending on unit.
