About the Role

The RN2 is an experienced registered nurse who provides direct nursing care to individuals in an acute care environment requiring advanced clinical interventions. This role encompasses three key areas: direct individual care, preceptorship, and clinical management.

Responsibilities

• Provide complex nursing care to patients in an acute care setting, using advanced knowledge and skills in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Assume responsibility and accountability for delivering nursing care to assigned patients, including those under preceptors and students.
• Set priorities to meet patient needs based on assessment data and use effective communication strategies with patients, families, staff, and the public.
• Participate in unit and hospital-based quality assurance activities and committees to advance the nursing profession.
• Function as a unit leader, providing guidance and support to other nursing staff and facilitating hospital priorities related to patient care coordination.

Direct Individual Care

• Perform all direct patient care duties of a Registered Nurse 1, including advanced nursing skills in an acute care environment.
• Respond to individual emergency situations, set priorities for care, and implement nursing interventions based on changes in patient status.
• Identify safety and security risks to promote a culture of safety and prevent injury or harm.
• Provide clinical supervision and instruction to Graduate Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff.
• Delegate appropriate nursing activities and make clinical rounds to assess patient care needs.
• Perform supervisory duties, including preparing reports and performance evaluations for lower-level staff.

Preceptor

• Guide Registered Nurse 1’s in choosing nursing interventions, developing skills, and applying knowledge.
• Serve as a consultant/resource nurse for staff, orient new staff, and provide feedback on nursing skills in specialty care areas.
• Act as a preceptor for nursing students from various academic programs.
• Develop and maintain knowledge related to standards of care for specialty areas.
• Participate in in-services and educational programs related to clinical specialties.
• Assist in providing educational programs and learning aids to staff and students.
• Collaborate with healthcare team members to identify, develop, and implement nursing research studies.

Clinical Management

• Coordinate with health team members for consultation and problem-solving of complex clinical issues.
• Collaborate with nursing leadership to develop short and long-term clinical goals for units and departments.
• Evaluate and integrate clinically specific information on patient care and operational functions.
• Develop specific policies and procedures in consultation with leadership.
• Define, recommend, and provide corrective actions to upgrade standards for quality and appropriateness of care.
• Oversee testing of equipment and supplies for effectiveness in patient care.
• Facilitate, lead, or represent the department on various hospital and unit committees.
• Participate in evidence-based practice and/or clinical research.
• Assist in implementing and achieving necessary operating changes.
• Take charge of the unit in the absence of Registered Nurse Supervisor 1’s.
• Identify and report issues related to individual care, operations, and quality outcomes.
• Identify potential conflict situations and facilitate solutions.

Working Conditions

• May involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids, and tissues.
• May be exposed to unpredictable, emergency, and crisis situations.
• Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
• OSHA Category 1 classification.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Possession of a license and current registration as a registered professional nurse in New York State.
• One year of service as a Registered Nurse 1 (T&RC).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or matriculated into a BSN program.
• Two years of post-licensure clinical nursing experience in the specialty area in a healthcare setting.
• National Certification by a specialty organization.
• Current competencies in the specialty for the position applied.
• Current/active member of a professional organization within the specialty.
• Served as a preceptor within the last twelve (12) months.
• Served as a charge nurse within the last twelve (12) months.
• Chair or Co-Chair of a hospital-wide or unit-based committee.
• Current Human Subjects Research Training (e.g., CITI).

Acute care is defined as medical services provided for short-term, intense illnesses requiring vigilant monitoring and quick recognition of potential problems.

Pay

$116,446 - $133,621
