Registered Dietitian - Supervisor

About the Role

Oversees clinical dietitians, performs administrative duties, and participates in patient satisfaction, quality management, and performance improvement projects and meetings. Collaborates with leadership in Food and Nutrition Services and other departments related to patient care and nutrition. Provides clinical nutrition duties across multiple sites. Completes nutrition assessments and delivers medical nutrition therapy using the nutrition care process. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary care team and provides nutrition education for patients, families, medical and non-medical staff, and the community.

Responsibilities

• Leadership Management:
  • Interviews, selects, orients, trains, rounds, and develops dietitians, dietetic technicians, and dietetic interns to uphold Trinity Health’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Ensures the clinical dietetics team adheres to the Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice.
  • Creates and adjusts schedules to provide adequate coverage while optimizing staffing patterns.
  • Assists in timely review and payroll sign-off.
  • Maintains updated employee files, including annual competencies, registration, licensure, certification, and continuing education requirements.
  • Assists the Regional Clinical Nutrition Manager with performance evaluations and disciplinary action as needed.
  • Coordinates dietetic intern schedules and experiences to meet competency requirements.
  • Serves as a liaison between the General Manager and dietitians to resolve menu/formulary-related issues and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Assists the Regional Clinical Nutrition Manager in implementing Trinity Health initiatives, standards, and new programs.
  • Functions as a clinical nutrition expert and technical advisor to clinical staff, directors, and managers across multiple sites.
• Patient Care Management:
  • Meets hospital, department, and regulatory standards for nutrition screening, assessments, and reassessments.
  • Uses evidence-based practice and clinical judgment to individualize medical nutrition therapy; documents using standardized Nutrition Care Process Terminology.
  • Actively participates in rounds, interdisciplinary teams, and committees.
  • Provides education and counseling to patients and/or families as needed.
• Education and Training:
  • Provides nutrition and related education to Food Service Staff, medical, nursing, dietetic interns, and allied health as requested.
  • Conducts yearly clinical nutrition competency assessments for all Clinical Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians.
  • Participates in promoting health and providing nutrition education/information for the community or café, in collaboration with the Retail Manager.
• Performance & Quality Improvement:
  • Ensures dietitians adhere to scope of practice, standard of care documentation, and policies through chart audits and timeliness of assessments.
  • Maintains minimum productivity standards and ensures benchmarking tools are completed and reviewed.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary meetings and committees, including quality improvement and leadership meetings.
  • Identifies quality improvement opportunities, collects data, and develops and implements strategies.
  • Participates in food and nutrition-related research as appropriate.

Requirements

• Active status as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and licensed where states mandate.
• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and advanced certification (e.g., CDE, CNSC, CSO, CSG, or AP) preferred.
• Minimum 3–5 years of clinical experience in an acute care setting.
• Previous experience working with dietetic interns, maintaining comprehensive curriculum, and acting as a preceptor.
• Strong communication skills and ability to interact positively with physicians, patients, families, and hospital staff.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and experience interacting with inspectors.
• Ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities and demands as a self-starter and independent worker.
• Excellent leadership, analytical, organizational, planning, delegation, coaching, and computer skills (MS Office, EMR, nutrition software).
• Demonstrated knowledge of diverse patient populations and acuity levels in a high-volume setting.
• Ability to work effectively in a diverse, collaborative, and team-oriented culture.
• Ability to lead a team, manage performance, provide constructive feedback, and prepare performance reviews.
• Ability to handle confidential information and situations with integrity and professionalism.

• Requires compliance with Trinity Health policies and procedures.
• Works in normal patient care areas and office environments with minimal physical discomforts (e.g., dust, dirt, noise).
• Requires travel to other facilities as needed.
• May experience exposure to injury, occupational, or contagious disease hazards requiring routine precautions.
