Job Responsibilities

Under limited supervision, provides therapeutic nutrition services for clients with high risk and/or complex nutrition-related medical conditions. Develops nutrition care plans for high-risk patient referrals and approves special and metabolic formulas. Participates in quality assurance processes for nutrition services.

  • Assesses and diagnoses the nutritional status of clients with high risk and/or complex nutrition-related medical conditions referred from WIC, MCH programs, and other health care providers.
  • Develops and implements nutrition interventions including counseling, follow-up, referral, and coordination of care with other health care providers.
  • Provides and documents care utilizing the Nutrition Care Process and according to program policy.
  • Approves, documents, distributes, and tracks special and metabolic formulas per program policy and procedures.
  • Orders special and metabolic formulas for drop shipment to clinics.
  • Provides consultation and technical assistance related to special formulas to staff and health care providers.
  • Enters, updates, and issues food benefits for high-risk clients and clients receiving special formulas.
  • Consults with and trains health care team members, health care providers, community organizations, staff, and the public.
  • Affords professional expertise, consultation, and technical assistance to health care team members, health care providers, community organizations, staff, and the public.
  • Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of WIC/MCH nutrition services.
  • Affords assistance with quality assurance processes for WIC program nutrition services, such as RD high risk documentation, WIC certifications, nutrition education, and special formulas.
  • Updates professional skills and knowledge to ensure delivery of quality nutrition services.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities.
  • Completes and maintains advance certification(s) required for the position.
  • Participates in Disaster Preparedness and Response as indicated.
  • Maintains adequate training for Disaster Response Role.
  • Performs other duties as assigned related to the position.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A master’s degree and registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietitian or registration eligible.
  • A bachelor’s degree with professional clinical or public health experience and registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietitian.
  • A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor's degree in any field, eligibility for registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting.
  • A registered dietitian (RD or RDN) with a master’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, public health or related degree. Two (2) years of professional work experience may be substituted for the master's degree.
  • Nutrition experience in a clinical, public health or community setting is accepted.
  • An active license to practice from the SC Panel for Dietetics or eligibility to apply for a license is required.

IMMUNIZATION: All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis, Varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.
