As an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, Registered Dietitians (RDs) use nutrition education to help improve quality of life for patients facing chronic kidney disease. Responsibilities

  • Aid patients in making diet and nutrition choices that enhance their quality of life.
  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments for new and at-risk patients.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and patients to develop and implement individualized care plans based on nutritional assessments; review progress monthly and document goals.
  • Identify specific interventions necessary to meet nutritional needs based on evidence-based guidelines, best practices, and current research.
  • Educate patients and family/caregivers about renal diet and fluid management.
  • Maintain regular monitoring of laboratory results and weight changes, and make recommendations to meet established goals.
  • Employ a patient-centered care approach, respecting and responding to individual and cultural preferences while encouraging engagement.
  • Participate in Quality Assessment Performance Improvement processes, documenting and attending meetings as required by clinic policy.
  • Create and distribute nutrition materials to promote adherence to renal diet guidelines.
  • Communicate nutrition concerns with the care team, including attending physicians.
  • Stay updated on kidney disease and nutrition advancements and share this information with the care team as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • At least one year of professional work experience in clinical nutrition as a registered dietitian after completing the registration exam is required.
  • Previous renal care experience is preferred but not required.
