Registered/Certified Medical Assistant

About the role

We are hiring two full-time Medical Assistants to work in our Community Health Center in Southeastern Utah. Our clinic is a dynamic environment offering integrated services including primary care, behavioral health, pharmacy, dental, specialty referrals, chronic disease management, and health education.

Responsibilities

• Perform nursing assessment and identify pertinent information to verbalize to provider.
• Review and implement primary care provider orders.
• Participate in ongoing education and training.
• Educate patients regarding their healthcare and the healthcare system to empower effective self-care.
• Reduce the risk of infections through proper hygiene and sterilization practices.
• Safely administer medications, including oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections.
• Perform nursing evaluation and follow-up for continued comprehensive care.
• Accept delegated tasks in accordance with the Utah Nurse Practice Act.
• Interview patients to determine medical problems or conditions.
• Address patient telephone inquiries by evaluating and responding to concerns.
• Observe and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to the provider.
• Obtain and record patient vital signs, pain level, weight, and other health indicators.
• Screen patients for depression, tobacco use, caffeine use, diet, health literacy, learning preferences, and medication allergies.
• Collect samples (e.g., urine, blood, sputum) for testing and follow up with patients as needed.
• Dress wounds and apply hot or cold compresses as ordered.
• Assemble and use oxygen supplies.
• Order diagnostic procedures and labs as directed by the primary care provider with verbal order read-back.
• Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at all times.
• Attend mandatory monthly meetings, webinars, conferences, and training to stay current on evidence-based practices.
• Complete yearly competencies as assigned by your supervisor.
• Educate patients about immunizations, providing Vaccine Information Sheets (VIS) and discussing side effects, disease management, comorbidities, family planning, and wellness.
• Maintain proper hand hygiene and use personal protective equipment (PPE) per CDC recommendations.
• Perform low-level disinfection and sterilization of medical equipment, devices, and supplies.
• Maintain and order supplies, disposing of expired or damaged items properly.
• Update patients on their immunization schedule according to CDC recommendations.
• Remove expired medications or injectables from crash carts and coordinate replacements.
• Write prescriptions at the provider’s request with verbal read-back of the order.
• Assist patients with scheduling appointments and follow up with those who miss appointments.
• Follow up with patients on lab results and schedule additional tests as needed.
• Write referrals with verbal read-back for patients through insurance and other physician offices, and follow up on them.
• Confirm medical records are available in the patient chart before follow-up appointments.
• Ensure delegated tasks are understood, safe, and performed correctly with appropriate supervision.
• Document patient assessments, orders, interventions, and communications in health records within specified time frames.
• Schedule and hold monthly or quarterly rounding meetings with your direct supervisor.

Requirements

• Medical Assistant (MA) certification or registration within the state of Utah.
• One-year certificate from an accredited college or university.
• Ability to safely lift, push, and pull fifty (50) pounds or more above waist level.
• American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) certification.
• Valid driver’s license and must meet the organization’s insurability requirements.
• Successful completion of a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
• First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Annual inoculation of the flu vaccine and tuberculin skin test.

Immunizations

The following immunizations/vaccinations are required for employment:

• MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): Documentation of two MMR vaccines or MMR titers.
• Complete Hepatitis B vaccine series (3 doses), documented proof of titers indicating immunity, or a signed declination.
• Proof of up-to-date PPD skin testing (if previously negative) or proof of positive PPD with recent chest x-ray and treatment history.
• Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap).
• Varicella titers, history of varicella, or varicella immunization series.
• Influenza vaccine for the current year.
• COVID-19 vaccine.
• Any other vaccinations as requested.
