Registered Apprentice

Directly reports to: Project Foreman. Locations vary per job site.

Schedule

6:00 AM – 2:00 PM (hours may vary by job site).

Responsibilities

• Be at the job site at start time and ready to work.
• Assist the foreman (open gang box, unchain ladders, etc.).
• Receive and understand daily task instructions; perform assigned tasks.
• Maintain materials and tools:
  • Keep materials organized.
  • Inform foreman when materials are running low.
  • Help keep the job site clean on a daily basis.
• Begin acquiring tools for the electrical trade.
• Register and attend a Maryland Apprenticeship program (IEC, ABC, Carroll County, etc.); maintain proper attendance and above-average grades.
• Learn and understand safety on construction job sites.
• Maintain a clean appearance and professional attitude.

Year 2 Apprentice

• Advance to new tasks, including pulling wire in conduits and “trimming out” (installing switches, receptacles, and light fixtures).
• Apply knowledge gained from Year 1.
• Continue building an electrical toolbox.
• Register and start Year 2 of IEC schooling; maintain proper attendance and above-average grades.
• Register and attend any electrical seminars offered by the company.

Year 3 Apprentice

• Assume more responsibility on the job.
• Pass on conduit bending skills to new helpers.
• Wire equipment (heating and cooling units) and “land” panels (terminating wires on lugs and circuit breakers).

Year 4 Apprentice

• Assume increased responsibilities, potentially leading a crew in a specific area of the building.
• Read blueprints and select appropriate materials.
• Develop supervisory skills.
• Install larger and more specialized equipment and lighting fixtures.

Additional Year 3 & 4 Apprentice Duties

• Implement applications learned from Years 1 and 2.
• Continue building an electrical toolbox.
• Register and start Years 3 and 4 of IEC schooling; maintain proper attendance and above-average grades.
• Register and attend any electrical seminars offered by the company.
• Take on added responsibility by performing electrical applications.
• Develop a solid understanding of electrical materials.
• Develop a beginning understanding of blueprints (symbols and layout).

Requirements

• Legally able to work in the United States.
• Able to follow and give directions.
• Able to concentrate on tasks and learn repetitive tasks.
• Moderate to advanced understanding of tools, materials, and fasteners.
• Punctuality and dependability.
• Ability to understand and communicate information.
• Reliable transportation to and from job sites and apprenticeship classes.

Education & Experience

• No experience necessary to enroll in Year 1.
• Must be willing to enroll in the Maryland State Apprenticeship Program.

Physical Requirements

• Able to bend and stretch overhead easily.
• Able to withstand prolonged periods in extreme heat or cold.
• Able to lift 50 lbs or more.
• Good hand-eye coordination and endurance.
• Good mobility (for shoveling, sweeping, etc.).
