About the role
Responsible for overall financial health and performance of drinking water / wastewater within Northeast Michigan, including budget, investment allocation, and profitability as directed by the senior vice president.
Guides growth strategy for drinking water / wastewater service line — identifying market opportunities and aligning resources to meet future demand.
Executes risk management strategy; identifies and mitigates risk to Northeast Michigan operations, financial stability, and reputation.
Defines and analyzes problems in a timely manner and makes expedient, consistent decisions.
Serves as project manager on large multidisciplinary projects - if in a project manager position, prepares invoices and collects A/R for clients.
Responsibilities
- Takes direction from designated regional vice president, director, senior vice president, and/or executive vice president on company goals and vision.
- Participates in Regional Strategic Planning Committee and offers drinking water / wastewater market share growth strategy.
- Establishes and maintains effective communications between technical service areas.
- Holds regular group meetings to coordinate workload distribution.
- Executes regional business development focused on drinking water / wastewater and coordinates upstream efforts.
- Supports and understands client challenges, funding realities, and long-range plans, connecting them with the right Spicer Group technical expertise to deliver value over time.
- Develops and executes client maintenance plans.
- Develops new clients within Northeast Michigan.
- Maintains and grows strong relationships for municipalities, authorities, and utility owners; state and regional agencies; industry partners, contractors, and funding stakeholders.
- Serves as client manager on projects as assigned by the regional/senior vice president.
- Engages with local government and industry stakeholders to influence policies and secure project opportunities.
- Performs community engagement within Northeast Michigan.
- Implements mechanisms to collect and analyze client feedback, using insights to refine drinking water / wastewater offerings and improve client experience.
- Provides leadership for drinking water and wastewater services across Northeast Michigan, ensuring projects are delivered with technical excellence, sound judgment, and a strong understanding of local conditions, regulations, and client expectations.
- Collaborates with drinking water / wastewater leaders to assemble the right teams for complex projects.
- Pairs with directors to ensure technical excellence and compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations for all technical service areas.
- Works with directors to compile project teams and pursue regionally-vetted work.
- May supervise employees, including completing annual performance reviews, managing attendance, and performance management.
- Leads, mentors, and develops drinking water / wastewater professionals within the firm - creating an environment where people are challenged, supported, and proud of their work.
- Collaborates with other regional managers to share best practices, align strategies, and pursue cross-regional business opportunities.
- Collaborates with the marketing department and directors to compose and complete large and/or formal proposals.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in related discipline, or experience equivalent.
- Significant experience in drinking water and wastewater engineering, planning, or infrastructure delivery.
- Established relationships within Northeast Michigan.
- Experience leading complex municipal or utility projects from planning through delivery.
- A background working with public funding programs, regulatory agencies, and local decision-makers.
- Demonstrate competency in client management and engagement, project management, communication, financial management, and collaboration.
- Proven ability to lead teams and mentor professionals.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to represent Spicer Group with clients, partners, and community stakeholders.
- Ability to travel 50%.
- Professional licensure (PE) and relevant certification(s) are strongly preferred.
