Dewberry is seeking a Pennsylvania Regional Geotechnical Engineering Market Sector Leader for our Pittsburgh, Mechanicsburg, or Philadelphia offices.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will have 15–25 years of geotechnical engineering experience on PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), and/or design-build projects. The successful candidate will lead a team designing geotechnical solutions for transportation projects, including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, soil/rock anchors, and embankments. This role involves project management, budgeting, proposal development, and construction support services.

Responsibilities

  • Direct staff in completing geotechnical engineering tasks for transportation projects, including slope stability analyses, Subsurface Exploration Planning Submissions, Foundation Recommendation Reports, Geotechnical Engineering Reports, and Alternatives Analyses.
  • Provide mentorship and training for junior geotechnical staff while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Maintain communication with internal and external clients to ensure project alignment.
  • Assist in developing statements of interest and determine scope of work for geotechnical tasks.
  • Prepare man-hour estimates and provide quality control oversight for all geotechnical engineering tasks.
  • Coordinate with bridge structural designers and communicate with clients to establish project goals, schedules, and budgets.
  • Prepare contract plans, engineer’s estimates, construction specifications, and perform construction support services, including shop drawing review.
  • Engage in professional societies to stay current with industry standards.

Requirements

  • BS in Civil Engineering (with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering); MS or PhD preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience with PennDOT and/or Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
  • Professional Engineering License in Pennsylvania.
  • Experience with PennDOT design specifications and AASHTO standards.
  • Proficiency in CADD (Microstation preferred), MS Office, LPile, GRLweap, DRIVEN, SLIDE, and gINT.
  • Experience with foundation design for transportation projects, including bridges, retaining walls, culverts, reinforced soil slopes, temporary shoring, and sign structures.
  • Strong technical writing skills for reports and proposals.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to monitor schedules and budgets while maintaining positive employee relations.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (driving is a requirement of the position).
