Regional Environmental Engineer, AWS Environmental Team
About the role
The AWS Environmental team is responsible for architecting and implementing AWS’s global environmental programs, including risk management and compliance systems, policy development, standards, tools, auditing, metrics, and employee training. The team drives engagement on global initiatives tied to Amazon’s sustainability goals and provides scalable compliance strategies to support business objectives while ensuring regulatory adherence. As a Regional Environmental Engineer (REE) based in Columbus, Ohio, you will oversee environmental compliance for AWS data centers in Ohio, developing standards and policies, analyzing performance, establishing metrics, and guiding teams in implementing Amazon’s environmental standards.
Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee compliance with environmental regulations and Amazon policies.
- Drive an environmentally responsible culture within the organization.
- Ensure work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees aligns with Amazon standards.
- Develop environmental metrics to measure, monitor, and forecast performance.
- Conduct thorough and accurate environmental audits for continuous improvement.
- Prioritize and manage multiple technically complex assignments concurrently.
- Represent Amazon with governmental agencies and internal stakeholders.
- Build collaborative relationships to identify and manage risks early.
- Assist in time-critical report submissions to governmental agencies.
- Complete thorough environmental incident investigations and regulatory reports, including corrective actions.
Key job responsibilities
- Partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific strategies for data center construction and operation.
- Support environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition.
- Execute regional and site-specific environmental permitting strategies.
- Support environmental compliance during design, construction, and operations.
- Engage throughout the development lifecycle with Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operations teams, as well as external stakeholders including regulators, consultants, and contractors.

AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS’s global infrastructure, including data centers and supporting systems. The team collaborates across AWS to deliver high standards for safety, security, and capacity while optimizing cost. You’ll join a diverse group of engineers, specialists, and managers working on complex challenges in a collaborative, innovative culture.
Basic Qualifications
- Experience with environmental regulations.
- Experience developing and implementing environmental compliance programs covering regulated waste, water, and air regulations in accordance with applicable laws.
- BA/BS degree in chemistry, chemical or environmental engineering, or a related field.
