Regional Environmental Engineer, AWS Environmental Team
About the role

The AWS Environmental team is critical to enabling AWS's growth in the US and around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS's global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products. The team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS's global environmental programs, including defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems and driving their continuous improvement; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics, and employee training; ensuring effective engagement by environmental teams on global initiatives, including those that are part of Amazon's ambitious sustainability goals; providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific development strategies enabling the construction and operation of AWS datacenters and infrastructure. You will lead environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition, develop and execute regional and site-specific environmental permitting strategies, support environmental compliance during design and construction, and prepare for data center operations. This role requires regular engagement throughout the development lifecycle with multiple AWS stakeholders including Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams, as well as external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, consultants, and contractors.
Key job responsibilities
- Assess environmental risks and requirements and develop mitigations and strategies to support data center siting and development strategies and site-specific project delivery
- Lead technical aspects of environmental due diligence, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, regulatory and permitting evaluations, natural, biological and cultural resource evaluations, and noise assessments
- Deliver environmental permits, approvals, and plans to enable on-time and compliant construction and operations for new data center locations and expansion of existing sites
- Communicate environmental requirements, risks, and activities to internal and external project partners
- Coordinate with partner teams including Real Estate, Design, Water, Legal, Risk, Power, and others to optimize site designs to consider natural resource or operational constraints
- Develop site development and permitting strategies that are environmentally responsible and sustainable while meeting project timelines
- Lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations in support of environmental permit acquisition and regional development strategies
- Develop, manage and track metrics to evaluate project success
Basic qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Experience in MS Excel, Word, and Windows Operating Systems
- 5+ years of project management in data centers or comparable critical infrastructure experience
- Experience delivering multi-media environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance projects with specific expertise in CWA 404 and NPDES permitting, groundwater protection, wastewater discharge, and natural and cultural resource evaluations
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of critical data center equipment
- Experience leading cross-functional projects and managing large, complicated programs
- Experience managing and/or supporting community/public interactions
