Region Associate Director (RAD), Neurology (Central)
About the role
The Region Associate Director (RAD) is a remote leadership position that is primarily responsible for leading a high performing field-based Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team trained in the area of Neurology and providing input to medical planning that support the safe and effective use of our medicines by patients, physicians, and payers.
Responsibilities
- Team Management
- Active member of the Field Medical leadership/management team, within and across therapeutic areas (TA)
- Identifies talent, conducts robust interview process for selecting highly qualified FM and other Medical personnel, and fills vacancies expeditiously
- Defines and effectively implements key talent retention strategies
- Ensures new staff attend new hire on-boarding and complete required therapeutic and administrative training programs within established timelines
- Develops appropriate succession plan
- Drives and tracks performance of FM team members and ensures objectives are met by regional FM team
- Effectively provides consistent coaching, mentoring, and frequent feedback to direct reports, and others, as appropriate; documents behavioral observations and performance as directed and/or as needed
- Conducts all company directed performance assessments with reports and actively participates in talent conversations
- Creates and encourages an environment that stresses open, candid and timely feedback relative to performance and behaviors
- Represents customers’/stakeholders’ concerns, priorities, and needs with internal stakeholders to develop strategic plans and innovative solutions
- Sets specific and measurable objectives and tracks and analyzes performance data against these measurements for the team
- Disease Area Reference Point
- Continuously updates and monitors team knowledge of Disease Area (DA), patient treatment trends, product data and scientific activities
- Ensures participation of team in planned therapeutic training activities
- Ensures FM engages in timely exchanges with external customers and internal partners in accordance with compliance policies and procedures to communicate medical information for all products in an accurate, balanced, fair and objective manner
- National Level Leadership
- Recognized by others for ability to develop field medical staff and preparing them for expanded roles across the enterprise
- Develops training initiatives that have national impact
- Develops and executes 1-2 medical initiatives per year
- Engages in appropriate collaboration with the region sales and access matrix teams to share geographical and healthcare provider information within compliance boundaries
- Collaborates with US (+/- Global) Medical and Commercial colleagues on Brand planning and FM activities
- Develops the Product FM Plan for the team in collaboration with the FM TA Lead
- Develops Region level Field Medical Plans in alignment with national FM plan and US Medical strategies and objectives
- Inputs into Medical Products Plans and Strategies based on analysis of medical literature and FM input
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with Matrix team members
- Provides strategic leadership and insights into the development of the Medical Product and Disease State Plans that produce tangible and measurable objectives
- Frequently called upon to provide strategic input and suggest solutions for key priorities and challenges; Serves as role model for creative problem solving and operational effectiveness
- Proven track record of developing new and innovative programs and processes for medical functions within and across TAs
- External Expert Manager
- Maintains strong knowledge of regional and national External Experts to provide input into planning, matrix initiatives, and requests for TL information
- Ensures FM team captures and communicates relevant medical insights; provides insight updates across the matrix as appropriate; contributes to development/implementation of action plans resulting from key insights
- Reviews/Approval of key TLs/HCPs for focused medical reach
- Guides team members in appropriate application of Thought Leader profiling activities and selections of health care providers for individual Medical Plan interactions
- Recognized by others for strategic vision and planning regarding customer centric approach to interactions; utilizes customized approaches to meet knowledge needs of customers
- Demonstrates customer-facing responsibility at aligned accounts (e.g., national/international TLs, C-suite); Visit frequency of at least 2x per year
- Customer Centric Focus and Medical Insights
- Uses active listening to understand customer needs and promote focused communication while ensuring appropriate two-way engagement with customers
- Significantly contributes to development and shaping of customer centric approach and medical insight programs

- Excels at implementing transformational methods that optimize customer insights and knowledge into the medical planning process
- Medical Planning/Strategy (RD BRAND LIAISON)
- Participates as an active member of the Medical matrix team
- Home Office (PPK-based) interface at least 2x per year, where strategic thinking can be demonstrated (e.g. National Point role responsibility)
- Creation/execution of 1-2 medical initiatives per year
- Communicates information to national team and ensures execution of Medical Strategies, Objectives and FM Plans within boundaries established by regulatory and legal compliance in accordance with company policies and sound ethical practices

- Scientific Material Contribution & Review
- Assess, identifies and contributes to resolution of gaps in FM resources; collaborates with the Field Medical Communication Specialist (FMCS), TA point, Medical Information and Medical Strategy on development of appropriate FM scientific resources
- Collaborates with FMCS, FM Trainers, TA point and Medical Strategy for development and implementation of the therapeutic training plan for the DA and associated product(s)
- Account Management
- Facilitate scientific collaboration within account with both a customer-focus and BMS enterprise view
- Create a trusted partner relationship with senior leaders at the account
- Create a collaborative exchange with account through sharing the BMS scientific strategy and coordinating dialogue with external stakeholders (e.g. site leadership, thought leaders, scientists, research staff, pharmacists, industry-affairs office personnel, etc.)
- Effectively and timely triage of issue resolution across the account(s), including integrating and facilitating interactions with BMS customer-facing stakeholders and then mobilizing them to respond to customer needs
- Pharmacovigilance
- Ensures that FM team has the required knowledge to identify Adverse Events
- Tracks FM region activity toward clinical trial visits/ISR management, as appropriate
- Ensures that the role of FM in the submission process of investigators’ proposals for clinical trials is completed in accordance with Company policies, and applicable law, regulations, and ethical standards
- Ensures active participation of FM in providing input on clinical trial site selection and feasibility based on their knowledge of investigators in their geography
- Ensures active collaboration with Region Clinical Operations partners and actively engages in issue escalation and resolution

Requirements
Required Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, or a related field.
Required Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical or biotech industry, preferably in a medical science liaison role.
Preferred Education: Master's degree in a related field such as Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, or a related field.
Preferred Experience: 7+ years of experience in pharmaceutical or biotech industry, preferably in a medical science liaison role.
