Join our team in this vital role performing heavy manual work in the collection of garbage, refuse, trash, and recycling on residential routes as part of a supervised crew.
Responsibilities
- Pick up and carry medium to large-sized containers on an established residential route.
- Pick up trash in other areas as directed.
- Dump containers into truck, ensuring all refuse is deposited; clean area around truck and container; return empty container to its proper place.
- Perform related work as required.
Requirements
- Some knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the work.
- Some knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of garbage trucks.
- Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
- Physical strength sufficient to lift and carry heavy objects over long distances in adverse weather conditions.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at time of application.
- Subject to random drug screenings and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements, including registration and consent for queries.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions for extended periods, in and around vehicular traffic.
- Work among heavy machinery and dangerous/sharp objects.
- Exposure to slippery, wet, or icy conditions and noisy environments.
- Additional hazards not listed here may be encountered.
Pay
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union. Hires contribute 9% of pay to the City pension instead of Social Security.
Schedule
Typically 40 hours per week, with a shift from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (including drug screening), and a 120-day probationary period.
