Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Empties containers into compactor on garbage truck.
- Operates hydraulic levers located on truck.
- Checks sidewalks and curbs to ensure area is clean.
- Inspects all carts for objects that may damage equipment (dirt, iron, wood or rocks).
- Picks up trash and assists with street maintenance activities as required.
- Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors, and other business contacts.
- Must follow all rules of telephone courtesy in all telephone communications.
- Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of machinery, equipment operation, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety practices and requirements.
- Knowledge of operation of tractors.
- Ability to lift medium weight objects.
- Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.
- Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
- Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees and respond to general public complaints.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English or Spanish language.
- Ability to comply with all City of Laredo's policies and procedures.
- Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Physical effort: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or risks. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly.
- Work environments: Outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), construction sites, vehicles; seldom warehouse; never office.
- Exposures: Often exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, individuals with known violent backgrounds, extreme cold (below 32°F), extreme heat (above 100°F), communicable diseases, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, loud noises (85+ decibels).
- Travel: Often local travel; never regional, national, or international.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Valid Texas Driver License (if applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment).
