About the Role
The Refractory Crane Operator / Vacation Coverage Operator is responsible for all aspects of the refractory position, ensuring productivity standards as defined in the quality system are met.
Responsibilities
- Operate the overhead crane and assist the Refractory Shift Leader and Refractory Group Leader in day-to-day operations.
- Install refractory in all melt shop vessels, including Electric Arc Furnace, AOD, Ladles, Slab and Billet Tundishes, Emergency boxes.
- Operate all refractory equipment, such as fork trucks, overhead cranes, jib cranes, mixers, tundish tilt dumps, gunning machines, air rammers, vibrating sleds, vibrating forks, and other related equipment.
- Supervise contract labor force in refractory installation tasks.
- Log all refractory consumables and maintain housekeeping standards.
- Contact maintenance for equipment repairs as needed.
- Cover shifts for the Refractory Shift Leader when required.
- Follow all safety procedures and participate in continuous improvement programs.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Refractory Shift Leader, Group Leader, or Refractory Supervisor.
Requirements
- Minimum of a High School Degree or Equivalent (GED).
- Ability to work well with others and strong communication skills.
- Effective time management and basic computer skills.
Physical Abilities
- Mobility within the plant, including sitting, standing, walking, and performing technical tasks with hands.
- Occasional lifting and/or moving of up to 100 pounds.
- Visual ability (with or without correction) and strong depth perception for crane operation.
- Ability to work a rotating shift (weekly or bi-weekly rotation between days and nights).
Health and Safety
- Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
- Adherence to company safety rules and reporting of any defective protective equipment.
- Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), including:
- Safety shoes
- Safety glasses
- Hearing protection
- Hard hat
- Respirators (requires being clean-shaven)
- Fire-retardant clothing
- Acid PPE
- Follow all Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines.
- Compliance with all environmental policies and regulations.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area.
Work Environment
- Clean, well-ventilated, and safe work areas in compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
