Referral Specialist

Responsibilities

The Referral Specialist reviews and coordinates external patient referrals for potential admission to facility programming. They provide accurate evaluations of the facility's capacity and capability to meet the needs of referred patients. Job Duties/Responsibilities include:

• Scheduling referrals for patients, providers, and pre-authorizing/pre-certifying tests/procedures.
• Scheduling other tests with facilities at the request of providers and/or staff.
• Directly communicating with clinics, referred clinics, and patients.
• Reviewing clinical data to report medical necessity to insurance companies.
• All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or GED.
• Two years' experience in a healthcare or clinical setting.
• Communicates effectively with clinics and hospitals.
• Covers as a receptionist at other clinics as requested.
• Schedules tests and referral appointments within 24 hours from receiving the physician order.
• Notifies patients within 24 hours of their appointment.
• Pre-certify appropriate tests with insurance companies within 48 hours of physician order.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Independence Physician Management (IPM), a subsidiary of UHS, was formed in 2012 as the physician services unit of UHS.
